Hi Gale Found this in one of my research books and thought I would send part of it to ou Fron the book SUTTON'S POINT 1829 WHO CAME FIRST pg. 15-18 Excerpt from this article reads; It is unfortunate that the McCawleys left us no wrtten record of those early days (1810 - 1816) but that is nit true cincerning the GOBLE family who also arrived in 1860. In 1811, Stephen Arnold , moved into Illnois from Kentucky. He came too a site on the Big Walbash River about 5 miles south of Vincennes on the Illinois shore not far from Fort Compton. It was there that is daughter, Nancy, met George GOBLE, wh was the son of another revolutionary War Veteran, Benjamin GOBLE. In 1812 George GOBLE and Nancy Arnold were married in Fort Compton and it was in that same Fort where Benjamin GOBLE was born October 17, 1813, the first born of George and Nancy. In the fall of 1816, George Goble moved to what we now know as Clay County. He went to work for McCawley but soon had trouble and was unable to get along with his employer.and in the spring of 1817 moved to a site about 2 miles west of the river. This would be very near the present location of Clay City Cemetery In the spring of 1826, George GOBLE sold out to Crawford Lewis and moved to a farm near St. Louis. In 1827 the GOBLE family moved to Missouri and finally in April 1829, moved to Galena, Illinois. In October 1829, George GOBLE died of natural causes, leaving 16 year old Benjamin GOBLE the responsibility of caring for his mother. The county seat was eventualy called Louisville, in honor of Crawford Lewis but it just as well could have been GOBLESVILLE. If this is your Gobles, let me know and I will send you the whole 3 page article. It is a very interesting and informative article. Sandy
