I think you might have a typo there. The brothers were James Wiley Chance, Jr. and John Riley Chance (rather than James Riley Chance) at least as recorded by Silas Brown Wright, per my copy. You haven't seen real confusion until you try to determine whether it is Hillary, Hilary, or Hilry Chance. :-) However, I've noted that the transcription of the tombstone inscriptions in Fredonia Cemetery (Marshall Creek Cemetery, Tonti Township) indicated that the senior James Chance is Wiley (d 5 Jan 1866) although the name is entered parenthetically. The parenthetical entry indicatres that this might be a genealogical note appended to the actual transcription of the inscriptions. The transcriptions were prepared in late 1970s and early 1980s and subsequently published in 1997 by the Marion County Genealogical Society. Unfortunately, I've lost or misplaced my photos of the stones of the Chance tombstones in that cemetery so I haven't an original source upon which to rely. Maybe Dorothy could shed some light on the parenthetical entry...actual inscription or genealogical note added to the published transcription?
