Hi to all. I would like add a few more bits of info that I have found about our Samuel Young. In his Revolutionary War Pension application Sam stated that he was born in Cumberland co PA the 7th day of May 1762. He and his family moved to Northumberland co PA where he was drafted into service on his 16th birthday under a Capt Samuel Young. He does not say if or how he was related to Capt Young. He served as a guard at Lee's fort for 3 months. He then moved to Montgomery co VA where he served two 3 month tours of duty under Col. Campbell. He served as an "Indian scout" during the battle of Kiing's Mountain in Oct 1780 near the North Caorlina / South Carolina border. He never stated that he attained any more rank than private. That leaves us with a mystery as to why he was called Captain Sam after he settled here in what became Marion Co. From the 1850 census of Marion co we find his oldest daughter Jane who married Robert Snodgrass was born in 1782 in North Carolina. He then said that he moved to Spartanburg co SC to Franklin Co GA to Sumner Co Tn. We find that daughter Nancy who married William Albert was born in Tn in 1798 and youngest son Matthew was born in TN in 1802. If anyone has a clue as to how our Sam got the title of "Captain" please let me know. There were many Captain Samuel Youngs that existed during the lifetime of our Sam but I cannot find one that would fit our Sam. Most of them were of the wrong age. Thanks J. Ray Young I am of the 6th generation of Youngs here in Marion co. I descended from Sam's youngest son Matthew.
