Now that the state will no longer send death certificates the Illinois State Genealogical Society has a project to obtain them for people. For some counties this is cheaper than going to the County Clerk. In other counties it is not. Hi Cheryl, Would you know if a death certificate issued in 1882 in Marion Co. would include the deceased mother's maiden name? This information would be greatly appreciated. Death certificates were not mandatory then. I don't know if one exists and if it does what it would say. They vary dramatically. Someone might be able to tell you their experience with Marion County during that period. Just as a point of information, the details on death certificates are provided by a possibly unreliable source. There is no guarantee that the person providing the information really knew the information given. I've seen many death certificates with incorrect information. It is not uncommon for children not to know their mother or grandmother's maiden name or where she was born for example. That death certificate would NOT be one the ISGS will get for you. They are only obtaining the ones from the State Archives Death Index.
