I had written earlier that the Lucy Chance to whom William A. Smith referred in one of his letters was possibly the daughter of James Wiley and Mary Margaret "Millie" Nichols Chance b. 10 Jun 1842 who m. 28 Mar 1868 George W. Kretzer. There are two other possibilities, one of them pointed out to me by a descendant of Elijah Chance. These are William's sister Lucinda b. abt 1837 m. 13 Aug 1853 Elijah Chance and William's first cousin Lucinda, d/o of Britton and Mahalia Foster Smith, who m. 3 Oct 1861 Hilary D. Chance. Elijah and Hilary were brothers, sons of James Wiley and Mary Margaret Chance. Elijah served in Companies H and F of the 7th Cavalry Regiment Illinois. Hilary served in Co D, 111th Infantry Illinois. I had also commented that the Jeff Boring and John Boring to whom William A. Smith referred in another of his letters may have been brothers or half-brothers, sons of Thomas J. Boring, Sr. These gentlemen were brothers and the sons of Thomas J. Boring, Sr., and his first wife, Elizabeth Pursley, not his second wife Margaret Irwin. They were first cousins of William A. Smith as their mother, Elizabeth was a sister of the Sarah Pursley m. Mordecai Smith. Mordecai and Sarah were William's parents. Thanks to Nancy Johns for clarifying the relationship of Jeff (Thomas Jefferson Boring, Jr.) and John Boring to each other and to Elizabeth Pursley Boring. A third Pursley sister, Nancy Ann b. 13 Feb 1822 m. 20 Apr 1841 Montgomery Thomas Ballance to whom William A. Smith had referred in more than one of his letters. Montgomery was William's uncle by marriage. Sid
