How do you go about buying one of the books. I would like book #4 but did not find it listed as being for sale on the Marion County site. I am a member of the Marion County Genaological & Historical Society but have never seen anything about purchasing these books. Thank you! Dave they weere in the middle of the cemetery by a ditch. If we would have had any idea where they belonged you can be sure that is where they would be now. We thought perhaps someone would claim them and they could be returned to the rightful owner and not destroyed because at 1st glance they looked like someone had just tossed garbage out. The way the wind was blowing that day and raining, they could have blown there with no trouble from anywhere in the cemetery. From an issue of "Footprints in Marion County" it looks like they still have books available, including cemetery book # 4. Write: Marion County Genealogical & Historical Society P. O. Box 342 Salem, IL, 62881 Cemetery books are $35, pluse $2.75 shipping. There is a Marion Co. IL Marriage book # 2, 1888-1931 for $40, plus $2.75 shipping. (Not sure there was ever a book # 1, as those dates are online.) Also Brink McDonough History Marion and Clinton Counties, (reprint has full name index). $45, plus $6 shipping. It is a hardcover, very large book. Dot
To volunteer to do lookups in resources that you have, contact the coordinator for the rootsweb site for Marion Co. IL----or whatever county you can volunteer for. Most of the county rootsweb sites work the same way. For Marion Co. Kim Phillips Randolph is the coordinator. You can click on her name on the opening page for the website. By doing so it brings up a pre-addressed email. There you write what resources you have in which you are willing to do lookups. I appreciate Sandy's offer for help very much. I may just use that help when it is busy, but it is really best to write to Kim Phillips Randolph so she can get your name and the name of your resource on the website as a volunteer. Dot

This might be a helpful website for IL cemeteries. It is the Illinois State Genealogical Society website. Cemeteries are listed by county. NOT listings of surnames online, just the names, locations and status of cemeteries. You might at least find out if a particular cemetery is in the county and whether or not there is a reading of it. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilsgs/ilcemeteries/ilcemetery.html Dot
Sandy, You aren't listed on the IL Roots Web page. Right now, Dot is the only person listed to do Book 1 & 2 Marion County look-ups. Thought you might be listed on some other site for Book 3. Have thought about ordering book 3 & 4 (which I don't personally need) just to be able to offer lookups for folks on that site. Wanted you to list me there just so there would be someone else besides Dot Bellmer. I thought I had already done it, but guess I did something wrong, because I'm still not there. Thanks again for your help today, can't wait to hear from you. Hi Sandy, People sometimes leave letters or photos in zip lock bags at grave stones. They are intended for the deceased. It would be a good idea to put them back at the cemetery near the place you found them. I've seen this done at a few cemeteries. I think it's inspired by the movie "Mermaid." I thought a few words about cemetery books for Marion Co. might be of help. The Marion County Genealogical & Historical Society has published four cemetery books. None of them include Centralia. The cost of each book is $35 plus shipping. Most of them are 300 pages or more and one is probably over 500 pages. Each book includes a few townships. Book # 1 Patoka Foster Carrigan Tonti Book # 2 Alma Kinmundy Meacham Omega Those two books above cover the upper half of Marion Co. Book # 3 Haines Iuka Romaine Stevenson This book covers the southeastern corner of Marion Co. Book # 4 Odin Raccoon Sandoval EXCLUDING Hillcrest Cemetery That leaves the two most populus townships-----Salem and Centralia unpublished. I understand that it takes a LOT of work to inventory cemeteries, type the data, cross reference for notes, proofread and then have books printed. The index of each book has a full name index----every person, alphabetical order, not just a surname. All of this is done by volunteers. Many members of the genealogical society, live out of state so that leaves a few people who do a lot. I can say that as a volunteer to do lookups, it very rewarding to help people find some long lost relative or conquer a "brick wall". But when someone asks for ALL of a surname, and it is a common surname---at least in Marion Co., it can be a bit overwhelming. It is helpful if requests are made for specific people. That way more people can be helped without spending hours for one lookup and maybe the names sent include only a few that they really know anything about at all. Thanks for letting me have my say. Dot
Last Thursday a cousin came from OK and we were walking Elder Cemetery. While walking it we came upon a zip lock bag containing 3 pictures. We don't have a clue who they are as there are no names writen on them. If anyone on here lost them out there please let me know and I will gladly return them to the owner. they are of a girl or young lady, a small toddler (boy abt. 1 (not good at guessing ages) and a Cubs ball player. If you know anyone missing these please contact me at sandy@usafast.us I would love to return them Sandy
There is an old GAR Chapel in Elmwood Cemetery. A few years back it was somewhat renovated, through the spearhead efforts of a lady named Ann Chappel in Centralia . I believe, that years ago, in the winter months when the ground was too frozen to dig burial plots, the chapel was used for a temporary resting place. Brenda
I really appreciate those of you who have the cemetery books and are willing to lookup the HOLTON family who are buried somewhere in Centralia. I have looked through all the on-line resources and they are not listed. I have listed that there should be at least Alice Holton and William M. Holton. I think there should be a family plot with more than these as the family lived there. Any HOLTON's would be appreciated. Thank you so much!!! I am not aware as to who does the flags in the Centralia Cemetery, however, the American Legion does most of the cemeteries in the northern part of Marion County. meb
If you bring up GOOGLE and type GAR in its search block you will get all kinds of inof on the Grand Army of the Republic. meb
