    1. [ILMARION] BLM Web Site Down
    2. Cheryl Rothwell
    3. The Bureau of Land Management's web site has been very useful to me. Unfortunately, it is down again. The following article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 2003 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. Information about the newsletter is available at http://www.eogn.com. - Court Again Pulls the Plug on BLM's Computers About a year and a half ago I wrote an article in this newsletter with the title, "Bureau of Land Management Computers Knocked Offline By Judge." In that article I described orders issued by U.S. District Judge Royce to Secretary of Interior Gale Norton. Judge Royce ordered Secretary Norton to "immediately" disconnect from the Internet every single computer, server, and system that has access to individual Indian trust data. The following day, many of the government's Web servers, including several containing genealogically valuable information, were disconnected from the Internet. You can read the article I wrote at: http://www.eogn.com/archives/news0152.htm. Three months later, the genealogy records were again made available online. See http://www.eogn.com/archives/news0212.htm. Apparently little has changed since 2001. In a new Memorandum Opinion and Preliminary Injunction issued this week by Judge Royce C. Lamberth of the U.S. District Court for Washington, D.C., the court stepped in again to pull the plug on the Bureau of Land Management's systems. According to the former CIO of the Bureau of Indian Affairs: "For all practical purposes, we have no security, we have no infrastructure... . Our entire network has no firewalls on it. I don't like running a network that can be breached by a high school kid." Details may be found in the court's document at http://www.dcd.uscourts.gov/96-1285as.pdf and in a recent issue of Government Computer News at http://www.gcn.com/vol1_no1/security/22935-1.html

    3. If you go to the USGenWeb Archives you can search by state. You can search any state or do a nationwide search -- maybe not the best idea as the results could be overwhelming. I also discovered, by experimentation, that is best to do a surname and given name search as the surname only search can be pretty overwhelming. Note this search is limited to the special projects of USGenWeb, does not include mailing lists, census and other archives. 1. [ILMARION] Cemeteries
    2. Mary Park
    3. Hi -- this cemetery discussion reminds me of how nice people can be. My daughter and I went to Marion/Wayne County a few years ago to find the grave of my ggg gr James T. BRIANT. I had a map and directions by Betty Beeson, and found the general area, but age had sort of changed the looks of things == not MY age, but the country! Well, my age, too, I guess. Anyway, we stopped at Barnard Stock Farms near Geff -- just to ask questions. The owner Harold Barnard, and his son, Todd, not only answered my questions, but offered to lead us to the cemetery. I was ecstatic, and we followed Todd in his pickup, back up the highway #45, turned in, went through a little oil well operation, and stopped. He led us through the cornfield, around a creek, to a little grove of trees right in the middle of the cornfield, and there was the cemetery -- and there was my ggg grandfather's grave! I can't describe my feeling when I stood there in the quietness of the trees and cornfield, birds chirping, so peaceful, and 'communed' with my ggg grandpa. The Barnards knew the owner and that she wouldn't mind if we went in, and later my dau and I called on the present landowner, a lady, who was most gracious. So, there is no moral to this story, unless it is that there are more nice people than not-nice! Cousin Mary in OK Mary Bryant Park BRYANT/BRIANT, ALDERSON, WINFREY, DODD, TURPIN, ADAMSON. 3. Bob I think that you are correct about the access. The comment was partially in jest. From where I was on the road it will be a challenge getting through the brush. I hope I am looking at the wrong spot that is why I recommended that he call the local fueral home. There might be some other way in. In a quick look at the listing in the cemetery book it looked like the latest burial there was in 1964. Ray --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. If I am not badly mistaken, I think under Illinois law, regardless of who owns the land, they cannot block access to any cemetery. The same situation arose in Montgomery County about a year or so ago. I am not sure just what transpired over a period of time, but I feel sure that access to their cemetery in question was finally granted. You might access the Montgomery County Rootsweb site and post a query I am quite sure you will get an answer to the problem. 1. [ILMARION] Parkers in Marion County
    2. Judy Dukes
    3. My ancestor Henry Dukes went from TN to MO to Marion Co IL about 1853. I have many of his descendants and have communicated with both Mark Paine and the Sibinskis. We know that Henry's parents were Henry Dukes and Ferribe Jane Parker of NC and TN. We can't find the parents of either, but would like to find out if and how the Parkers and Dukes who came to Marion Co were related to the Dukes. We'd like to reconstruct the early Parker family there if possible. We know that Ferribe had a sister Rebecca Parker who married a James Farmer and went to TN with Henry and Ferribe about 1830. They had a daughter Elizabeth Farmer who married Henry Sr.'s brother John Dukes, her first cousin, and John and Elizabeth lived in Marion Co in 1840 and 1850. I know this is confusing--I don't see how they kept it straight, myself, but what I really want to know is if the Parker descendants there have traced the family--if there is a family tree. 3. Gary Aparently you cannot get there from here. :-) The map shows the Cruise cemetery in the SE corner of the township off Marshall Creek road on property that was owned by Dale Linder. Dale does not live there anymore so I do not know who owns it. I just drove by and there is no obvious way into the cemetery. There are no tresspassing signs all over the area. It looks to me that the way to get there would be go north on Marshall creek road from the church through the bottoms until you must make a left turn and walk into the woods north from that point. You might call the Day Funeral Home in Patoka and see if they know anything about it. Their phone is 618 432 5324. Sorry I cannot be of more help. 1. [ILMARION] Benjamin Courson and Licking Co., Ohio Cemetery
    2. Gwen
    3. Our thanks to Steve for the website for the Courson cemetery in Licking Co., Ohio. Following are some notes on Benjamin and the cemetery. Gwen Notes for BENJAMIN COURSON, SR.: Family legend is that Benjamin was a veteran of the Revolutionary War and suffered a injury while loading a cannon. The only veteran of that name that has been found to date is that of Benjamin Cousen/Coursin who served as a private with the 3rd PA Regiment. Only two sheets of Company Pay Roll are included in this record. The one saying that he volunteered January 28 (no year given) enlistment January 1, 1777 to April 1, 1777. He was paid Half pay of 8 pounds 17 shillings 6d. On the bottom of each sheet is a note: Casualties - died Aug 30 (again no year given). In the 1790 census of Northumberland Co., PA we find Benjamin Courson with one male under 16 (Isaac?) one male over 16 and two females (Catharine? and Benj's wife). In 1800 census of Fayette Co., PA lists Benjamin Courson one male under 10 (Benjamin Jr.), one male 10-16 (Isaac), one male 45 and up (Benjamin Sr.), one female under 10 (Charity?), one female 10-16 (?), and one female 26-45 (wife) . Benjamin is in Ohio by 1809 when he is listed on the tax list of 1809 and 1810 of Bowling Green Twp., Licking Co., Ohio. In 1810 he bought 22 1/2 acres in Bowling Green Twp. and sold same to Isaac the 21 Oct 1816. No wife is listed in this transaction. He could have been living with James Orr Jr. in 1820 as indicated by the listing of a male over 45. There was no female of comparable age, so if this was Benjamin, his wife must have died previous to this date. It is probable that she died prior to the move to Ohio or shortly after arrival. In 1824 Benjamin filed claim against the estate of James Orr Jr. In the 1830 there is a male, age 90-100 at the residence of James Orr Sr. that is believed to be Benjamin. On 21 Jan 1833 we find a document protecting the son-in-law of James Orr from any claims made by Benjamin Courson Sr. The following is from a Oct. 23, 1979 letter from Helen McGaughey of Newark, Ohio: There is reason to be believe that he could have been living with Severn and Jane Johnson at the end of his life and is probably buried in one of two cemeteries on Shelley Road in Bowling Green Twp., both of these cemeteries on property once owned by the Courson families. One is located on the Suss Courson farm, measures about 20 by 40 feet and appears to have had three rows of graves. It is overgrown with trees and many saplings and full of brush, briars and poison plants. This is most likely Benjamin Sr's burial site since it is here that James and Charity Courson Orr are said to be buried. At one time Isaac's broken stone was there but is now gone; the foot stone for Isaac's wife is still there but gives no information. In 1979 when this information was given only three stones were standing only one of interest to Courson research - Peter Courson, son of Isaac and Jane, died Nov. 23, 1863, aged 60 yr 4 mo 19 da Two other stones were dug up in 1979; one being that of Peter! 's wife Nancy, died May 29, 1873, aged 65 yr 1 mo 7d, and the other a Harris infant. The other cemetery is about a mile farther down (south?) to the Emma Courson farm. This has been a larger cemetery with many graves and is beautifully mowed, being a part of the area mowed for lawn of the country-estate type home recently built there. The marker for Robert Orr, died Dec 31, 1834, aged 55 yr, has been moved to the barn. His wife's, Elizabeth is still standing but is broken right at the point of giving the date of death, making it impossible to read. However it had been copied earlier and her death date is known to be May 15, 1861, aged 88 yr. Also there is the stone of William, son of J. & J. Orr, sied Aug 1 1842, aged 3 mos. A marker which can not be clearly read is either Robt. John Orr or Rev. John Orr, d Aug 29, 1842.Sr. Her name could have been Catherine or Mary. Her age listed as 26-45 in the 1800 census would indicate that she was born 1754-1774. If Catharine was born 1766 these dates do not compute. It is possible that the wife listed in the 1800 cens! us was a second wife.
