First, many, many thanks to Dot Bellmer for scanning those pages of the Footprints in Marion Co. for me!! What a great document for the Marion Co. Genealogical Society to publish!! I do have a correction to that article (Vol 16, No. 1, Summer 1991, p. 69-74, Abe Earnhart - The Music Man) if there is anyone from the Society on this list. On page 73, paragraph 7: "Both Charles (born in 1856) and Georgia (EARNHART) RANDOLPH (born in 1874) died in 1938. She on June 2 and he on June 27, and are buried in East Lawn Cemetery." My comment: The Charles D. Randolph buried in East Lawn Cemetery (1856-1938) is more likely to be Charles R. Randolph's uncle. The 1920 Census shows the two Charles and Georgia living in Salem together. Charles R. Randolph, the husband of Georgia Earnhart, was born in 1871-1872 in Youngstown, Ohio and was the son of John Clayton Randolph (1848-1935 in Paulding Co., OH). Charles R. Randolph, husband of Georgia, was still alive in 1947 and living in Salem, IL per the obituary of his brother, John Francis "Frank" Randolph of Youngstown, OH. John Clayton Randolph had a brother named Charles Davis Randolph, b. 1854. The 1920 Census shows him to be 66. In the 1930 Census the two Charles, Georgia, and Georgia's son, Charles Baker were living with Abraham and Florence Earnhart, Georgia's parents. However, Charles #1 & #2 & Georgia are listed with the last name of LaMont. The Randolph/LaMont name was used interchangeably because the Randolph's owned/managed the LaMont Brothers Circus that wintered in Salem, IL for 27 years (1901-1928). Is there anyone in Marion Co. who would be willing to check out East Lawn Cemetery for me. I'd be willing to reimburse for photos. I would like to see if Charles R. Randolph (Abt 1871-Aft 1947) is buried there or possibly somewhere else in the county. According to the article all of the following folks from this family should be buried at East Lawn: Charles D. Randolph (1856-1938) (the uncle) Georgia Randolph (1874-1938) John Earnhart (1802-1871) Nancy Earnhart (1802-1891) Abraham Earnhart (1842-1930) Florence Earnhart (Abt 1851-1932) TIA, Sally Holden Dyson longtalsally@comcast.net Researching: Holden, Gaston, Sabin, Catlin, Ide, German, Frost, Gleason, (Fitz)Randolph, Roberts, Hughes, Jones, Hogan, Russel(l), Young, Dyson, Watts, Brown, Swann and many more
Hi there. I am new to genealogy, and new to this list. I am amazed at how far I was able to go back on certain branches of my family tree, but frustrated on another. Namely, the one from Marion county! Specifically, I am looking for information about John Fie, who was a miner and lived in the Caryle, Central City and Centralia areas his whole life. His wife was Annie Elizabeth Moore. I dead-end everywhere I look for these two! Also looking for information on James Walter Chambers, from Centralia. He is the aforementioned couple's son-in-law. He married their daughter, Minnie, who was my great-grandmother. Can't find anything concrete on him either! Since I am new to this, any help would be appreciated! Feel free to privately e-mail me if you like. Thanks in advance! Laurin
Gary and others Thanks to Marion Brimberry who is also on this list I was able to get to the Cruse cemetery. I got a pleasant surprise. The cemetery is accessable by car and is maintained. Actually there are flowers on many of the graves there. I guess there are a couple reasons for the no tresspassing signs in the area. Many people are going down the wrong road trying to find the cemetery and with the remote locaton it is a good site for the "dealers" to do their business. To get there go North from Marshall creek Church on Marshall Creek road until you have to make a left. Go left 1/4 mile and right 1/2 mile there is a narrow rock road. Right about 1/4 mile and find a pipe cattle guard right across the guard and follow the lane to the gate of the cemetery. I hope this helps. Ray --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Hi Sally I can answer some of your questions. Yes there was a newspaper printed in Salem during that time, maybe there were two. They are on film but the only copies that I know about are in the Salem library and are not available for loan. I do not have the paper names available as the names changed several times through the years. Maybe soneone else on the list can tell which was being published at this time. I see that you are also researching the YOUNG name. Are any of your Youngs connected to Marion co. If so I might be able to help a little there. There are several Youngs in the county. Is there anyone on this list who could please do a look-up for me? I found this reference to Abe Earnhart in Marion Co., Illinois: Abe Earnhart, Marion co., IL Surname: EARNHART Record Type: Volume: 16 Number: 1 (Summer 1991) Periodical Title: Footprints In Marion County Abe Earnhart was the father of Georgia Earnhart who was married to Charles Randolph (owner/manager of the Lamont Bros. Circus). I have found this family in Salem, Marion Co., IL in the censuses 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930. I believe Georgia was previously married to a Baker and had a son Charles Baker (b. 1893). I have been unable to find Charles Randolph or Georgia Earnhart Baker Randolph in 1900 or 1910...the circus was probably on the move. Abe, his wife Florence and grandson, Charles were in Salem, tho. I'm hoping the above item in the Footprints in Marion Co. will shed some light on these folks. Also, does anyone know if there was a newspaper published in Salem from 1900-1930? If so, is it on microfilm & available through interlibrary loan? Hello Everyone, I am trying to find any information on: Charles W. Randolph b. 1871-1872, Ohio, d. aft. 1947 (I'm not sure about the middle initial) Georgia Randolph b. abt 1874 Illinois, d. unk. Charles Davis Randolph b. Nov. 1854 Ohio, d. after 1920 (I'm not sure about the middle name on this one either...he would probably be the uncle of Charles W.) I found these 3 people in the 1920 Census living in Prec. 2, Salem City, Salem Twp., Marion Co., Illinois, sheet 2A. Charles W. was a circus owner/manager and we know that he "wintered" in Salem, Illinois. He is the brother to my husband's g-grandfather. He had another brother, Harry "Had" Randolph (b. abt 1875) who also was in the circus with him, but Harry died in a train accident (with the circus?) in about 1912. A 1910 Census for Paulding Co., OH shows that Harry was married to Anna (?) b. 1882 Ohio, m. abt 1907, d. unknown. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Hi Ron, to me it is genealogy. It is part of History. This is how I learn about the ancestors, i found where my Uncles were in a race and that they one. I printed it out for my one Uncle and told one of the children about it. Harriet laughed. And My Uncle would say I I remember that. He is now deceased but some of these things were from his time. I know this is not really genealogy related, but I couldn't resist passing this along. Seems the editors of the Salem Republican had a sense of humor. From the Aug.2, 1955 edition. It was not the headline, but it was on the front page. "OUTHOUSE DESTROYED BY FIRE YESTERDAY" There is one less outhouse within the Salem city limits today as the result of a fire yesterday. Salem firemen at 4:55 p.m. were called to the V. R. Middleton residence, 303 South Marshall street, where an outhouse was burning. Twenty-two firemen were on duty until 5:20 p.m. Fire Chief Paul Sweney Jr. said cause of the fire was spontaneous combustion of organic matter. The outhouse was a two-holer.
