    3. Gwen and Mary The 1850 census of Marion co is not that bad. As with all census it is not perfect but quite good actually. The copy at the geneological society library has extensive notes by a couple local geneologists and is quite helpfull.     3. Gwen, who are you researching on the census in the 11th district? I have BRYANT, and have seen the census, someone told me that it was agreed that it was the worst census taken! My family, as nearly as I can determine, was listed twice, in two different districts, and everyone had been given just initials, or "Ma" and "Pa". The children only were given initials.     3. I have a death certificate from Fayette County for a William BRYANT, age 2, who was born in Marion County in 1878. My great aunt, Martha MC COLLUM b. SC March 1840, married a William Ames BRYANT born TN, about 1836, in Fayette County 17 March 1858. They had a son, James Douglas, or Douglas James, born probably 1858, or possibly 1859. Martha remarried in 1878 in Fayette County, but I believe William had been dead too long for him to be the father. Besides, they lived in the Bingham area. This William BRYANT, 2, could very possibly have been a son of Douglas. Does anyone have any information as to who baby BRANT belonged to? Bob in NM

    3. I have not learned of any daughter of William Dawson Dorris and Nancy Wright who was named Luetta. However, they had a great granddaughter named Cora Luetta d/o Rebecca Ellen Davis and Madison Monroe Belcher. Rebecca Ellen was a d/o Israel and Lucinda Dorris Davis . That great granddaughter may have been named by Rebecca after a sister. This name is of significance because it was a Luetta B. Davis who m. George Peyton/Payton. Israel Davis married (1) Lucinda Jane Dorris on 13 Feb 1856 in Marion County (2) Mrs. M.M. Chandler on 6 Jan 1868. I have not discovered the maiden name of Mrs. M.M. Chandler. Perhaps someone could provide it here? The Israel and Margaret [Chandler] Davis household is enumerated at family #75 in the 1870 Federal Census of Marion County, Illinois (Sandoval P.O.) where Israel, age 39 born in Tennessee, is a farmer. The children residing in the household and listed in the following sequence are Ellen, age 14, Ada, age 12, Belle, age 10, Nancy, age 7, Mary, age 9, Amanda, age 8, John, age 6 and Edward, age 1. In view of the marriage date, probably only Edward is issue of Israel and Mrs. [Margaret] Chandler, with Mary, Amanda and John issue of Mrs. Chandler's prior marriage and Ellen, Ada, Belle and Nancy issue of Israel and Lucinda Dorris, meaning that Lucinda would have died sometime between 1863 and Jan 1868. Unfortunately, none of these were identified by the census taker as step-daughters rather than daughters so the census entry is not conclusive of the mother's identities. Marriage and Death Certificates might provide an answer to the names of the parents. Ellen Davis, who was age 14 in the 1870 census, probably is the Rebecca Ellen "Nellie" Davis who m. Madison Monroe Belcher on 25 July 1872 in Butler, Bates County, Missouri. They seem to have returned to Marion County almost immediately. They had three children, all born in Carrigan Township, Marion County, Illinois, two of whom are buried with their spouses in the Patoka Cemetery. These two were Cora Luetta Belcher b. 15 May 1873 who m. James William Good and Lawrence Eldoris [Eldorus] Belcher b. 13 Sep 1888 who married Sylvia K. Wade. The third was Blanche Edith Belcher b. 3 Sep 1885 who married Charlie Snyder and who is buried in Harrison Cemetery in Carrigan Township. The father and mother, Madison Monroe and Rebecca Ellen Belcher, are also buried in Harrison Cemetery. Belle Davis, who was age 10 in the 1870 census, is probably the Luetta B. Davis who m. George Payton on 3 Jan 1879 in Bates County, Missouri. This family appears at dwelling #242 in the 1880 census of District 144, Boone Township, Bates County, Missouri dated 22 and 23 June 1880 where George Peyton, age 29 b. in Indiana, is a farmer and Belle Peyton, age 19 b. in Illinois, is Keeping house. They have a four month old son , Harvey, born in Missouri. George said his father was born in Kentucky, mother in Ohio; Belle either said that her parents were born in Illinois or that she didn't know where they were born (the census taker had drawn a line through the blanks for these entries). Thus, it appears likely that Israel and Lucinda Dorris Davis had a daughter named Belle or Luetta Belle. I haven't any idea as to the reason for Israel Davis's move to Bates County, Missouri. I don't know to which church these folks belonged, however, Morgan Nichols and his wife, Lucinda Wright, who was d/o Elijah Wright, upon John Wright's initiative (this is John Silas Wright, then of St Clair County, Illinois ) helped to found the Fredonia Baptist Church in 1834, the church at which is located present day Marshall Creek Cemetery. Silas Brown Wright in "Our Family Record" published in 1954 wrote that Elijah Wright and all of his children were born in Warren County, Kentucky with last known child born there in 1816. He also named James Dorris as husband of Nancy Wright. However, three of Elijah's children (Nancy b. 1806, John Silas b. 19 May 1807 and Levin b. 29 Sep 1809) report that they were born in Tennessee and Elijah himself reports in the 1850 census that he was born in North Carolina (9 Oct 1776). Elijah was the son of Levin and Ann Wright, who, according to Silas Brown Wright, removed from North Carolina to Warren County, Kentucky sometime between 1774 and 1776. An Elijah Wright appears in the 1820 census of Sumner County, Tennessee, in the 1830 census of Smith County, Tennessee, in the 1830 census of Lincoln County, Tennessee and in the 1830 Census of White County, Illinois as well as one in the 1810-1820-1830 census reports of Bullitt County, Kentucky. Several other Elijah Wrights appear in other states during that time frame. A William Dorris is cited in the "1881 History of Marion and Clinton Counties" as an early settler of Carrigan Township. There is a William Dorris in the 1830 census and the 1840 census of Carroll County, Tennessee and a William Dorris in the 1830 census of Marion County, Illinois. I haven't census images for the William Dorris in Carroll County. The enumeration for the William Dorris in 1830 Marion County is males 2-2-0-0-0-1-0-0-0-0-0-0-0 and females 0-0-1-0-0-0-1-0-0-0-0-0-0 in which the age of the eldest female is not compatible with the age of Nancy Wright. As I understand it, the father of the William Dorris who married Nancy Wright was William Gibbs Dorris who died 1832 in Sumner County, Tennessee. Our Elijah Wright first appears in Marion County in the 1840 census. I'd be glad to learn of the descendants of George and Luetta B. Peyton and any information those descendants might have had concerning their ancestry. Remember, there are a lot of folks who died before 1916 who didn't get a death certificate. But if they did eventually it should be in the database.     3. The Marshall Creek cemetery is in sect 19 of Tonti township. The easy way to find it is go north from Sandoval ( approximately 4 3/4 miles) on US 51 to Ferrydale rd and east 4 miles to the church. The road ends at the front door of the church. The cemetery is not that large and can be walked. I have found several graves there easily.
