Some of the reasons that people went into the west and northwest area in early times was for free or low cost land. There was something known as Oregon Donation Land in the 1850's. I believe that both husband and wife could file a claim for a certain number of acres free. With the passage of time, changes were made in the system so that it became low cost land for various time periods. Remember our ambitious, determined and dream-filled ancestors were always looking for a better place and the government greatly encouraged settlement further and further west by offering incentives to get free or cheap land. If you have not searched www.glorecords.blm.gov you are missing a treat. There is a link on it that explains all of the various ways people were able to get land and the time periods covered for each method. Dot
Sorry, no. Beverly
I have a story line on a John F. Adams, his wife Ann Moreton Adams, and their descendants. John was born in Ireland in 1810. He went to the Bermuda Islands, and here he married Ann Moreton. John and Ann moved to the USA and settled in Illinois (Fayette & Marion Counties) Thinking he was dead, she later married George Washington Mulvaney and that is how I came into this information. If there is anyone researching this family, let me know. I would love to share this information Sandy
I don't know much about Boise, ID., although all three were probably part of The Oregon Trail, if it was during an early time period. The Dalles, OR. is on the Columbia River and part of the route to Portland, Oregon City, and Fort Vancouver in WA. After statehood (what's that, 1859?) Salem was the capital of the state and in the middle of the Willamette Valley which was known for farming, Jason LEE and Willamette University. My HENSLEY connections were there involved in a mercantile business. In general many didn't come west until the train line(s) were put in (what's that, 1870's). Kay (Williams) Chestnut, a rare native Oregonian. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Thursday, May 10, 2001 11:48 AM Subject: Re: [ILMARION] postings and roll call > >Your post interests me because my Marion County, Illinois families migrated >to Boise, Idaho, then Salem and The Dalles, Oregon. The Illinois Statewide Marriage Index shows that a Lucinda Wright married a Morgan Nichols in Marion County on Sep 26, 1831. Morgan Washington Nichols died inestate in 1841. John Wright, presumably Linda's brother, was appointed as administrator of the estate. Four of the children of Morgan Washington Nichols are found in the household of Levin Wright in the 1850 Federal Census of Marion County. Levin is another brother of Lucinda's. However, I've not been able to find either a Lucinda Wright or a Lucinda Nichols in the 1850 Federal Census of Marion County. The Illinois Statewide Marriage Index shows that a Lucinda Nichols married a William Decter in Marion County on Oct 3, 1856. I've found no information other than this re William Decter. There are also three other marriages of a Lucinda Nichols in nearby counties in the same time period. The probate record signed by John Wright, administrator of Morgan Nichols's estate shows that the estate was settled eight years after Morgan's death. That record of settlement showed that John Wright had paid Morgan's widow for "the support of children" from the estate's account. In addition, the record of the sale of a part of the estate's inventory occurring in the same year as Morgan's death shows that a Lucinda Nichols then purchased one of the items while John Wright and Levin Wright purchased several items. Silas Brown Wright had indicated that Morgan Nichols had married a Lucinda Smith in his book, "Our Family Record" and lists as the issue of that marriage the four children who were residing with Levin Wright in 1850 as well as two who were not so residing. Levin Wright married in 1851 (to Martha Nichols, niece of Morgan) and moved to Texas in 1858. John Wright is interred in Fredonia Cemetery (Marshall Creek), his widow (a Chance) removing to Texas in 1877. Three of the four Nichols children (the girls) residing with Levin Wright in 1850 married in Marion County. The other child, Levin Nichols, removed to California according to Silas Brown Wright's account. The role of John Wright and Morgan Nichols in the founding of the Marshall Creek Baptist Church in 1834 is described at page 153 of the 1881 History of Marion and Clinton Counties. Of course, I too would like to find the career and fate of Lucinda Wright. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sherry Petersen" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, May 09, 2001 11:29 PM Subject: Re: [ILMARION] Part V - THE WRIGHT FAMILY (AND 91 OTHER SURNAMES) > What do you know about this Lucinda Wright?
