Hi Nancy, Thanks for the date for Eli/Ellen Boring. See my previous message for info regarding the marriage of Thomas/Margaret Boring. Regarding Sophie Boring, the copy of her tombstone transcription that I have says Smith, Sophia (w/o T.M.) d. 26 Nov 1893 30 yr 21 da This would seem to match 5 Nov 1863, and my bible date. But without a birth certificate....this information is only as good as the person who provided it at the time of her death. This is from the Allmon/Boring Cemetery Book, and I believe these were transcribed by the Marion County Gen Society. I have nothing on Marion W Boring (but believe him to be male) other than what is listed in the bible pages. He is not listed in the 1860 census abstract I have (which was done by someone else, not me). Because he isn't listed in that census, I believe he died before 1860, and most likely at or soon after birth. Regarding the birth year of Thomas J Boring, who knows! Census records indicate: 1850 he was 41 at the Sept. census 1860 he was 52 at the ?? (don't know when this census was taken) Anyway, with a birthdate of October 3rd, it looks like 1808 or 1807 to me. Where did you get 1804? Both census' indicate TN as birthplace. Keep in touch, Cheryle In a message dated 5/27/01 9:24:13 PM Pacific Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: > Cheryle, > > Eli W. Hello Sid, You are welcome. As to who wrote these records, I'm sure we will never know! I believe they were written by Eliza Chance, simply because all of her marriages and all of her children were recorded. Also, recorded were some of Thomas Boring's children that were from his marriage (2nd) to Margaret Irvin. None of the children from Thomas Borings first marriage are listed. However, the 1860 census abstract I have shows Thomas, age 52 and Elizabeth Bowden, age 38, with the following children, Ely W, age 26 John (Irvin) age 23 George W, age 22 Joseph D, age 17 James, age 14 Rebecca, age 12 William age 4 and Thomas H, age 2 Thomas and Eliza had been married 5 years at the time of this census, so it is apparent she helped raise Thomas' children from his marriage to Margaret Irvin, which might explain why they are listed in the bible. Just my theory! I do believe many entries were written by the same person. It is also likely they may have been written at approximately the same time, which makes me question the validity of every date. Some of these dates have been proven by me, the majority have not. I use them only as a guide. Regarding the marriage of Thomas Boring and Margaret Irvin, I have an uncertified copy of the marriage license of Thomas Boring and Margaret Ann Ervin that I obtained from the Marion County Clerk in 1999, as follows: side one The State of Illinois } Marion County } SCT. THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS. TO ALL WHO SHALL SEE THESE PRESENTS-GREETING. Sep. 19th 1842 Justus R. Ryman M.G. The spelling and grammar errors are not mine, they belong to the Justus! It appears the license was issued on the 17th, marriage performed on the 18th and certified by the Justice on the 19th, all of September, 1842. Sorry to be so long, but hope this helps! Are you saying if wanted to get my Grandpatrents marriage license for my Uncle who was married Dec 24, 1908 I could not get it. This man is 91 years old. This is as bad as Arkansas saying I could not have my Uncles Birth ceertificate unless he was dead 100 tears. I will be dead by then, especially since I have emphsyma. I guess also, you are saying I will never get the paper work I am waiting on about John Nichols. Am I reading this wrong? Karen May your day be filled with blessings from above. Hi everyone, The Illinois records, at least up until 1916 or later, are not closed to genealogists. Almost all of us have an LDS library somewhere fairly close to where we live. Go to this website: http://www.familysearch.com Click on the tab labeled LIBRARY, then click on Family History Library Catalog, then click on Place Search, then type in Marion - Illinois. The following marriages are available on microfilm for us to look at and each film is $3.25. You can also click on FAMILY HISTORY CENTERS to find out where the nearest library is to you. I know that the people at the courthouse should be more helpful, as they are in other IL counties, but if they aren't we do have other resources. Jan Creek

The first line of that form states: "According to Illinois law, our birth, death and marriage records are closed to the public, however, member of any Illinois Genealogical Society may check indexes only to 1916." The lady wants a marriage record from 1907 or 1908. I really don't believe she has a firm date. However, I do not understand why she would not be allowed a copy should she know the date. Is she misunderstanding something or has Illinois law changed that much since I moved out of state? Do you know if Samuel Michael had a brother named Elias? Elias Michael was born in about 1805 and died in Greene Co., IN in 1880. The Census shows many different states as his birth place-Illinois in 1850 Census, Kentucky in the 1860 and in 1870 he was born in Virginia. I think I found his son Samuel living in Lawrence Co., IL in the 1850 Census. I have one marriage listed for him in Greene Co., IN in 1845 to Polly Russell. My gr grandfather Lewis Newton Michael said his mother was Mary Butler. Newt was born about 1855 in Greene Co., IN. Mary Gardner
