Dear Shirley, thanks so much for the bios. They each added a few more nuggets to make my ancestors come alive for me. The bio of James CANNEDY (b.18 Mar 1790) raised a question for me that I hope one of the listers can answer. It says James "secured a competency, which he enjoyed in his declining years." Is this somewhat like a pension? or an appointed position, perhaps? Thanks again. Susan RENO LeBlanc
I think what they really meant was that he had managed to put away a nice sum of money/property/estate to make retirement more enjoyable. Many of the bios use this phrase .... for some reason they didn't just come out and say that they had "made enough money to be comfortable" which I think is amusing since they were so very direct about other things. ----- Original Message ----- From: "George & Susan LeBlanc" <gleblanc@bossig.com> To: <ILMAGA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 30, 2000 4:09 PM Subject: [ILMAGA] James CANNEDY, "a competency" > Dear Shirley, thanks so much for the bios.
