WOW!!!!! What a Hugh amount of work giving to others. Thanks so very much from all. TOM SAXTON
I think what they really meant was that he had managed to put away a nice sum of money/property/estate to make retirement more enjoyable. Many of the bios use this phrase .... for some reason they didn't just come out and say that they had "made enough money to be comfortable" which I think is amusing since they were so very direct about other things. ----- Original Message ----- From: "George & Susan LeBlanc" <gleblanc@bossig.com> To: <ILMAGA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 30, 2000 4:09 PM Subject: [ILMAGA] James CANNEDY, "a competency" > Dear Shirley, thanks so much for the bios. Dear Shirley, thanks so much for the bios. They each added a few more nuggets to make my ancestors come alive for me. The bio of James CANNEDY (b.18 Mar 1790) raised a question for me that I hope one of the listers can answer. It says James "secured a competency, which he enjoyed in his declining years." Is this somewhat like a pension? or an appointed position, perhaps? Thanks again. Susan RENO LeBlanc

I would like some feedback on those of you out there researching the Thaxton name, primarley Doctor Clay and his parents Wm. and Sarah Gravit Thaxton. In the History of Greene Co. 1879 edition he is called Doctor Clay Thaxton. It also says his mother's name was Mary which I know is incorrect. In the 1885 edition of the History of Greene Co. he is listed as H. Clay Thaxton other than that biography and the linage that some one has submitted to the WFT where it list him as Henry Clay Dr in parenthesis. I am wondering if and where there is any other documentation as to his name being Henry Clay. I have never found such. All the land patients where he purchased the land mentioned in the 1885 history he is Doctor Thaxton. Any one can go the web site http://www.glorecords.blmgov/ find these records view the actual document and order a copy if desired. He signs his name Doctor Thaxton. Doctor Thaxton on the 4 day October 1852 signed a document called Power of Attorney for ascertaining whether any increase or arreas of Pension are due the widow or heirs of Revolutionaary Pensioners. In this document he states his age (52) his mother's name Sarah when she died 16 October 1840 his father's name William that he died 5 of April 1850. He signed Doctor Thaxton. I have read articles on the customs of nameing children and it was popular for people in that era to name the 7th son Doctor. It was their name not their vocation. Whether he was a 7th son I don't know the 1879 History says so. WFT lists him as #5. His toombstone says only Doctor C. Thaxton and Carolyn W. Thaxton. Lastly when I asked my Grandmother if he was a medical doctor she said no that was just his name. I have been searching for the parents of William and Sarah for 30 years and have never gotten any further back than that. I have copies of the papers on file in the Revolutionary War pension claim R.10483, based on the military service of William Thaxton in that war. I would be very happy to hear the thoughts and results some of the other Thaxton researchers have come up with. Charlotte

Hello to all--I wish to write tonight of good news. If you are not able to hear the news. The 103 stone have been uprighted and put back in place. The thanks goes out to Arnold's Monument of Springfield, Illinois and Carlinville Monument of Carlinville, Ill. Each company sent in two men and equipment and Wimmer Cemetery's Alex Decatoire (retired Arnold's Monument employee, who is 83) and George LeConte ( he won't tell his age, but he is 80+) of Auburn started to work early and finish about 3:00 this afternoon. Also the new caretaker Harry Moore assisted. There were a few of the stone which Alex took home to repair with pins and epoxy. They will be repaired shortly. I talked to Alex's wife Mary Ann (president of Wimmer Cemetery Assoc.) and said all went very well and everyone was very tired. I can't believe this could be true, but it is. Thanks to the monument companies and their hoists it got done. Here is the information for anyone who would like to make a donation: Auburn Cemetery 15125 Kennedy Road Auburn, Illinois 62615 Thank you notes to: Arnold Monument Company 1621 W. Wabash Ave. Springfield, Illinois I sorry I don't have Carlinville Monument Company's address but will get it a post it. I have an email in to get it for you. Alex Decatoire 14656 Dixon Road Auburn, Illinois 62615 George LeConte 115 E. Adams Auburn, Illiois 62615 So let us now pray and hope they can get the vandals and let the courts do their job. Thanks to all who responded to my post. The geneaolgy family is the best family in helpping with crisis like this. Please if you can't send money, send a thank you note to the Monument companies, they worked for us for free. They came quickly and repaired these stone, not just set them back on there bases. And Alex and George---they are Wimmer's finest---of course I'm personally proud of them. Jan Gray Co-Historian Wimmer Cemetery Auburn, Illinois gjgrayinc@aol.com
Two years ago almost to the day Pawnee Cemetery, Pawnee Illinois was hit by vandals and they were caught and I was told at the cemetery that to this day they are still doing work for that cemetery. Update: All stone have been uprighted, they had six workers and they started early and finished at about 3:00 this afternoon. It was a miracle. There are stones that are going to need further repairs, but they are being worked on outside of the cemetery by Alex Decatoire and Geo. LeConte of Auburn, retired employees of Arnold's Monument in Springfield. Money for the help to defray costs and to the cemetery can be sent to Auburn Cemetery, 15125 Kennedy Road, Auburn, Illinois 62615 Thanks for all your support. Jan Gray Co-Historian Wimmer Cemetery Auburn, Illinois gjgrayinc@aol.com
I think its wonderful, that these two monument companies are going to help. However I think when these vandals are caught that they should have to spend their spare time working in the cemetery. Maybe that would give them some time to think about what they have done. I'm sure the caretaker could use them in the summer. And you wouldn't have to pay them either. Its to bad that they can't be caught first and then repair the cemetery.
It is a sad day in Auburn, Illinois--If you haven't heard the news--Auburn Cemetery was vandalized Tuesday night. Over 100 stones pushed over or broken. I was there at 6:00 tonight and it was a sad sight. The oldest part was hit the worse. It was also the darkest part of the cemetery. I talked to the caretaker who wasn't living in the house at the time due to remodling of the residence. He was really upset since he was just given the job a short time ago. I asked what I could do for him. He said that tomorrow that Arnold's Monument and a company from Carlinville would be bring hoists and repair equipment to start the repair work. I asked him what he would need in the way of help and he said he wasn't sure yet. I talked to Alex Decatoire, retired worker of Arnold's who lives in Auburn and who also worked with us on the Wimmer Cememtery Project and he and George LeConte of Auburn were going to help and anyone who could give a hand would be welcomed. This is what folks could do---help with repairs, such as applying epoxy, caulk, and holding stones while they steady them in place. It does no good to just set them back up---they need to be done right, and then they don't fall over again so easily. This will take weeks to completely repair. Wimmer was not hit---but Auburn Cemetery is closely related to Wimmer families and needs our help. They need money, they are all but bankrupted. They have not a clue who did this, but I'm sure in time they will. It is a very ugly picture to look at all the damage. Infant stones, small tablets, broke at the ground. Large monuments---Benjamin Kessler's---pushed over and in many pieces. It was 8' tall. Newer head stones that weigh many hundred pounds pushed over. It is very sad. I have to work tomorrow and Friday--so I will only be able to help for an hour each night until dark. I will keep you posted as to what they need, but if you have time tomorrow to help---go and help. Write a check or what ever you can do. I hope to make a list of which stones are damaged and post them as I find their names, some are pushed over so you can't read the name, but I'll try to see what I can find out. On the news tonight they are offering $500.00 reward for the names of the vandals. You can call 438-3090 and add to the reward or find out where to send money for the repairs. Please help. Jan Gray, co-historian of Wimmer Cemetery.
