My two-year search in Illinois for descendants of Alex. Smith and Isabella Munro of Nairn, Scotland has been great fun and very rewarding thanks to a lot of kind people including Shirley Aleguas, Florence Hutchison, Jill at Morgan County Clerk's Office. I finally found a real LIVE third cousin once-removed, a descendant of Isabella Smith and Hugh Wilson who now lives in CA. She sent me a picture of a lovely sampler, worked by Mary Smith in Nairn the year before the whole family crossed the atlantic and made their way to Illinois. Mary Smith became a teacher in Jacksonville and I would love to know where she taught. If anybody knows of any school records from 1865-1890, please let me know about them. Also, I am looking for the family of James Smith and wife Charlotte McLeod, marr. in Scot 1849. They had a son Alex. Smith b. 1850, Nairn. died either in Winchester or Jacksonville 1852. I believe James and Charlotte also had a dau. Isaabella b. 1851 -2. James died in 1852 - his name is on his parents monument in Jacksonville East Cemetery. Charlotte then returned to Scotland. with, I hope, her dau. Isabella who married a Menzies. Another Smith, Jane, married George Cousins 1876 in Jacksonville and disappeared in Oklahoma. Would love to find out about them. Another brother, William Smith died in Jacksonville 1862 and it is possible that he left a family of Smiths, heaven-knows-where ! I think I will never finish with this family - if anybody out there has any Smiths they don't own, maybe they are mine. Let me know. Thanks again to everybody who helped with all the info I have collected - I almost feel as though Jacksonville is my second home. Marion
Hi!I figured there would be a 'zillion' DYER's. I don't remember which one was mine. Zachariah, I think, but now that I know there is such a book I can try to find one when and if I ever get back up to Illinois again. As far as I know his real name was Dock Dyer and my grandpa Clarence Lea DYER was called Dock because he played baseball like the original Dock Dyer. Thanks for the info. There are quite a few Dyer names in here, but no Dock. Could that have been his nickname? All these names are listed in the Walkerville section (where my grandmother was from, too). And to the person who asked about Census records, check with your library. That's where I've been getting mine, since I don't live in Illinois anymore. Or a LDS Family History Center (usually in the phonebook). I clicked on this and there was a Bailey Tree listed. I have BAILEY's in my line. All that came up was a tree and a blank page. Very discusting. I guess that is spelled wrong, but the spellcheck doesn't work. Was wondering if your Green Co. Memories Book has information or picture of Dock DYER who was a ball player and I think served in the Spanish American War. Thanks! Yep, that's right. Most of their links are dead, and most of their listed record locations are empty. It's a major rip. Jack vicki lang wrote: > I clicked on this and there was a Bailey Tree listed. Hi Kathy, Do you know anyone who has Morgan Co. 1855 census, this would really help with the research, someone said Springfield had them. I checked in two research places in Springfield two weeks ago, and they said no. Any suggestion would be helpful. Thanks. Lorma

Lorma - Keep in mind this is a "picture" book. There is a "Heavy" Thompson mentioned on page 40 in the Early Greene section. It was a picture taken in Feb 1911 by Clem Reim. It is a group of men in two wagons. The name Radley is not mentioned in the index. Hi Kathy, Does the book have any Thompson, or Radley mentioned? My son and I spent 3 days in Jacksonville, 2 weeks ago. we will always remember the wonderful people who were so gracious, and went the extra mile to be helpful. I hope to hear from you Kathy. Lorma
Update This company has been soliciting money for their "huge" data base of genealogical information. Be advised that they appear to provide (at a cost to you) links to other peoples' information - and they do it without permission. Most of their links are now invalid. People have discovered their game, and changed the links. If you want to see what type of information they have, check this site. http://128.121.230.66/Records/states/ Jack Cox
I was able to get the "Greene County Memories and The People Who Made Them" book by Vernon R.Q. Fernandes (thru the Jacksonville newspaper). It's a great book. However, does anyone know him or how to get ahold of him? I know the chances of a reprint are slight to none, but I would like to get some corrections to him in case it ever does get re-printed. Thanks! Kathy
Hi! Thanks for putting the info on Otto and Charles A. KRUSE. Does anyone know who Charles' parents were? My kinfolks are Hie and Wibkie THOLEN KRUSE who lived near Arenzville at Indian Creek. Was Indian Creek a town or just a community of houses? Hie and Wibkie's daughter Catherine "Katie" KRUSE married John Lea DYER who ran a general store in Arenzville, and they are my great grandparents. Thanks for any info. I have a copy of a newspaper clipping from Nov 18,1992 which spoke of the devastating storm of 1911. On the 11th day of the 11th month year 1911. Remains a vivid memory for Virginia and the surrounding area. This came from the Virginia Enquirer. I can trnscribe it,but I believe I would need permission from the paper? The reason we have this particular edition was because Lula McLain-Stinson was born in the Virginia area and on top of the article is noted that she was born on this day. But contrary to other records we have her being born Nov 12,1911. So possibly her mother was in labor during the storm. Article mentions a boy named Otto Kruse,89 of Beardstown was 8 years old at the time of the storm. His father was Charles A. Kruse. Ginger Weston
