I don't find a Schelp listing nor any other name which looks like it could be Schelp. Jim - I don't find Abner Ray in the 1836 Land Tax Records, but do find James Ray listed (there are several other Ray listings) Morgan County, 1836, Page 93 (Included Cass & Scott) Line 25, Date of Land Entry: 23 Oct 1830, Patentee from U.S. Government: James Ray Present Owner: James Ray No. of Acres: 80 Section: E 1/2SW 15-14-13 Co. Tax: $1.20 and another entry: Morgan County, 1836, Page 94 Date of Land Entry: 18 Dec 1826 Patentee from U.S. Govt.: William Ambers Present Owner: James Ray No. of Acres: 80 Section, TN, RW: E 1/2 SE 28-14-13 Co. Tax $1.20 1840 Morgan County, Illinois Tax List James Ray is listed in the Personal Property Section, but the person who extracted the data didn't include the amount of taxes owed/paid. I don't see him included in the Property tax section and I don't find Abner listed either. Neither of them are listed in the 1841 or 1842 Tax Lists. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Ray" < > To: <ILMAGA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 20, 2000 10:05 AM Subject: [ILMAGA] Fw: Morgan tax lists > Would anyone have access to the 1835-1838 Morgan County tax lists? Jim, I believe these tax records were among the ones I looked at on microfilm, which I was able to get through my local LDS Family History Center branch. Maybe you could try that route. Juli
Would anyone have access to the 1835-1838 Morgan County tax lists? I am looking for a James Ray and an Abner Ray. And a question pertaining to the 1839 tax list: Is it a correct assumption if no section-township-range listed, that these are not real estate taxes, but personal taxes? And that these people are probably not land owners? Jim Ray
Dear Shirley, I haven't heard from MAGA for a long time. I think my membership must be overdue. Please advise how much I owe. I don't want to miss ONE of those great newsletters. My best wishes to Florence, yourself and everybody in Morgan County who has helped me so much with my Smith family. Have a joyful Christmas, all of you Marion Baker, St. John's, Newfoundland

I have been using the legacy program for a couple of years now. I have used PAF and Family Treemaker in the past. I even switched to the PAF4 when it came out, but went bakc to Legacy because I found it to be much more user-friendly and less cumbersome to work within. One of the things that I really like about it is that it is very easy to get and store pictures in the program. It prints out beautiful reports with several options for different types of embellishments. They are getting ready to upgrade which is probably why there is a free offer although I have never been pestered by them even after I switched to PAF for that brief time. Hope this helps. While surfing tonight I found a story re the SCRIBNER/THARP/BROWN surnames from the Waverly/Franklin area of Morgan county who migrated to Lawrence, Kansas and back to Morgan County. If interested go to this URL: http://kuhttp.cc.ukans.edu/carrie/kancoll/articles/graham.htm Page is titled "How William Met Millie" as told by Martha Tedrow. A forward from my Kaylor List.....if anyone out there does not have Family History Software, this sounds like a good deal.....its FREE from Legacy, supposedly no strings attached. Please read below. I have not downloaded this myself as I have a couple of software programs, so I cannot 100% vouch for this. Perhaps some of you are familiar with the Legacy line? Just passing on what seems like a really good deal for those beginning genealogists. An Index of some Post 1900 Calvary Catholic Cemetery Burials. For most records, this index includes: Decedent's Name, Parents names, Birth & Death Records, some include residence, spouse's name, where buried (there are a few catholic burials which weren't made in Calvary Cemetery in Jacksonville), and Marriage Date. You can find the index at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmaga/morgan/deaths/caldex.html I've put this index online since it includes information not given in the Calvary Cemetery Listing.

I've put up the "Ledger of Samuel F. Campbell" which was originally copied by Mrs. H. W. (Sara John) English from the original handwritten book in 1927. Florence published these extracts in 1997 in her Star Geneal Journal because they include the names of a number of people who weren't related to Samuel Campbell, but rather were probably neighbors and acquaintances of Mr. Campbell. The items may be of interest to others since they contain death dates which occurred prior to the use of death certificates. You can find this "Ledger" in the section/link called "Newspaper Articles of Genealogical Interest" near the top of the Morgan County Index page.
Some records extracted from the Morgan County, Illinois Coroner's Inquests, Book A, Starting in 1869. Will see if Florence has additional records which can be put online. You can find the new index under "Deaths" on the Morgan County Index Page.
