A MG (Minister of the Gospel) is a man of the cloth, (eg. Minister, Priest, Reverend) A JP (Justice of the Peace) is a Judge or a person that can perform marriages - other than that of the church - a local public officer. Hi all, I have a photocopy out of a Morgan County marriage book, and I am puzzled at an abbreviation. The people performing the ceremonies are J.P., Justice of the Peace, and M.G.. Would that be Magistrate? Thanks! Sharon Bookmyer sbookie@pacbell.net Rout, Reynolds, Henderson, Woody
I have a copy of my Great Grandparents marriage licenses in 1853, got it from Morgan County Courthouse. Don Estaque
Thought as my gggrandfather Edward NORTHCUT was only 17 when he married in Morgan Co. in 1832 his parents might have signed for him. No such luck, a James REDMAN signed as guardian for both him an his wife Frances BOWEN. Still seaching for the guardian information and both the parents of Edward and Frances. A later1836 lisense in Moran county for a second marriage of Edward NORTHCUT to Christiana SLAGE did contain a permission for his daughter Christiana to marry Edward signed by Peter SLAGLE. A 1849 Pike Co., IL. lisense for the marriage of Sarah Jane NORTHCUT, (the daughter of Edward and Frances BOWEN NORTHCUT) to Ebenezer FRANKLIN has the father giving his permission, but it is signed with an X and no name is given. Norman FRANKLIN NORTHCUTT
This page has some marriages listed and some of their parents are listed. Misc. Morgan County Marriages
I have an 1837 marriage in Morgan County, the mother of the groom gave permission, the father of bride gave permission. Both under age. If of age, doubtful if the parents will be listed that early as it wasn't required by law until much, much later (1916). And sometimes you get lucky and the parent's name(s) is listed because one or both are under age, or a parent must attest that they are of age. I have one from 1845, Bond Co., where a bride's widowed mother signed a statement that her daughter was of legal age to marry. Juli

Nancy - I have a marriage record that lists the parents dated 1892 in Canton, Fulton Co., IL. Mary
Nancy, I have several marriage licenses from Menard County. One for 1885 gives the names of the parents. (Wonderful) I have another one for 1886 which asks for parents names but they were both dead, so it was left blank. There is one from 1883 where the bride is underage and the father has to sign, giving his permission. The information is on the back of the license and I wonder if the clerks send all the information. Also, maybe the decision was left to the county about whether to ask for this information.
