Hi, I would like to find descendants who would appreciate having a copy of this family photo. It is a large colorized photo of members of the Griggsby or Grigsby family taken probably in the 1930's at Nortonville. It has 6 individuals pictured. The 2 I can identify are my G-G-Uncle George Kehl (1866-1959) and his second wife, Bessie Griggsby Kehl (1874-1943). The others are Bessie Griggsby's relations, a brother and a woman who could be his wife, or could be a Bessie's sister; and a young couple who are believed to be Bessie's nephew and his wife or sister. We know that Bessie had another brother who was single and farmed with her in Nortonville until his death, prior to this photo. George and Bessie married late in life, after her brother's death, and had no children to pass this photo on to. Juli Claussen Carbondale, IL

Grandfather was John M. ROGERS born abt.1839 in Syracuse, NY,(according to military pension records.) The family story says he & born in Quebec. There are 2 family stories passed down: 1) John was of English Canadian decent, & born in Quebec, Canada. He had an argument with his father about joining the Civil War. John left home joined the Civil War and changed his real surname of WARDELL to ROGERS. The surname ROGERS was his mother's maiden name. The reason behind this was so he could not be traced. 2) John M. WARDELL was born in England and related to the King. He and his father had augument about joining the Civil War in America. He left England and traveled through Canada to reach America. In order not to be traced he took "the cooks" surname of ROGERS. FACTS We found military pension records for John M. ROGERS, filed by his x-wife and youngest daughter, so he did in deed join the Civil War & became a Sgt. Major and enlisted in Co. G, 2nd New Mexico Inf. in Albuquerque, NM. on Aug. 29, 1861 (Union) and was discharged at Fort Craig, NM on May 5, 1862. According to these documents, on May 15, 1862 he married Elizabeth Caroline GOLLIHER/GALLAHER in Hannibal, Mo. She was the daughter of Patrick and Elizabeth MURRAY GALLAHER. (Patrick was born abt. 1825 in Ireland, a son of John GOLLIHER/GALLAHER who livied in Warsaw, Hancock Co. IL. in 1844. Elizabeth MURRAY was born abt. 1828 at sea or Germany and was the daughter of Miranda MURRAY of Rock Island, IL. They married August 08, 1844 in Rock Island, IL. John M.& Elizabeth had 4 known children - all carry "ROGERS" surname. 1) Hester "Hattie" Maranda ROGERS born Nov. 15, 1863 Hannibal, Mo died Dec 11, 1927. married John Wm. BREWER (On her marriage cert. it states her name is WARDELL not ROGERS.) They lived Hannibal, Mo, Chicago & Quincy, IL) Children: John Wm., Goldie Pearl, Cornelia Violet, Joseph Underwood, Hattie May, Elizabeth Ethel, Sylvia Lurvia, Addie L., Milton Roger BREWER. (Connecting families of John & Hester's children are: HABERICHTER, BROWN, WARREN, KLIEN, MADDOX, GUYATT, EASTWOOD, LANGFORD, TAYLOR, GIBSON, ASH, WHITESIDE, NEASE, DONALDSON, REIGER, PECKMAN, VAHLE, AKIN, THOMAS, CONNER, MORRISON, RUMMINS, ROWE) 2) Olivia ROGERS b. abt. 1866 Mo. (unknown what became of her) 3) George Buhler ROGERS b. Oct. 3, 1867 Hannibal, Mo. died Nov. 28, 1899 Hannibal, Mo. married Lula Rebecca REDDICK.(lived Burton & Quincy, IL, & Hannibal, Mo) Children: Lorena Alace (deaf & dumb. died at 3yrs. from a knitting needle through her brain.), George William, Howard Elmer, Lula Margaret ROGERS. (Connecting families of Geroge & Lula's children: HIGGINS, ADAMS, THRON, SCHEPERS, POWERS) After George Buhler ROGERS' death, his widow, Lula married William BREWER the brother of John Wm. BREWER who married Hester "Hattie" Maranda ROGERS. (They lived Quincy, IL & Hannibal, Mo.) Lula & William BREWER's children were: Leslie, Sarah Irene, and Otis Charles BREWER. (Connecting known family of William & Lula's children: McMULLEN, CRANE, HAMMAND) 4) Elizabeth ROGERS b. Jan 3, 1871 Quincy, IL. died Sept. 16, 1944 Hannibal, Mo. She was known to marry twice. First to Wm. BRASSELL.Children: Benjamin Frank, Elizabeth BRASSELL. (lived Davenport, Iowa, Hannibal, Mo) (Connecting families of William & Elizabeth BRASSELL: WELLS, OBERT, PEER, LITTLE) Second marriage: Wesley WILSON (No known children born to Weslie & Elizabeth WILSON) (also believe she had a son by Willian Ivory LANE named Norman Grover LANE. He married Mable MADISON. Norman lived Hannibal, Mo. & St. Louis, Mo) John M. ROGERS and his wife ELizabeth, in fact, divorced March 12, 1874 in Quincy, IL on the grounds of adultery by both parties. John had an affair with his wife's younger sister, Clara Ann GALLAHER BUCHHEIT. (Clara Ann was married to John BUCHHEIT of Quincy, IL. They married in West Quincy, Marion Co. Mo. on Feb 11, 1872 & divorced Sept 19, 1874 in Quincy, IL..) John M. WARDELL's wife, Elizabeth had an affair with William E. LANE. At least one of John & Elizabeth's children were placed in Woodland Orphanage in Quincy, IL.. The Woodland Orphanage records shows that the youngest daughter, Lizzie, was placed in the Woodland Orphanage between March and May of 1875, and when her mother returned for her, she was listed as married to William E. LANE. What happened to the other 3 WARDELL/ROGERS children? (George Buhler, Olivia, Hester"Hattie") Possibly George Buhler was taking in by the STEEL(E) or MILLER family of Burton, Adams County, IL. where George learned the Blacksmithing trade. Family story says George ran away from home and hopped on a train and ended up in Burton, IL. John M. ROGERS may have died in Natchez, Mississippi in 1878 acorrding to Civil War pension papers filed by x-wife Elizabeth & youngest known daughter Elizabeth ROGERS BRASSELL WILSON filed in 1920. Family story states his wife Elizabeth buried John M. ROGERS in her back yard in Hannibal, Mo. It is unknown what truly became of John M. ROGERS after the divorce. John M. ROGERS x-wife Elizabeth married William E. LANE in 1875 and lived Hannibal, Mo.William E. LANE died about 1899, and Elizabeth lived in Hannibal until her death on Dec 31, 1925. She was known as "Granny LANE." William E. LANE died around 1899 most likely in Hannibal, Mo. He had a brother Joseph W. LANE born in Plymouth, NY. who lived in Springfield, IL. until 1870 when he moved to Hannibal with his wife Abby and his 2 daughters Elizabeth & Mary "Mamie". Joseph died Oct 5, 1905 in Hannibal, Mo. Abby died June 11, 1915 in Hannibal, Mo. Both bodies were buried in Springfield, IL. Connecting families of Joseph & Abby: DUNNING, HESSER) Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. If anyone sent requests for bios and/or lookups late last night or this morning, you'll need to re-send your request. Managed (somehow) to lose all of my mail this morning. Sorry for any inconvenience. Shirley
No doubt about it, Shirley is a wonder! Thanks Shirley! Bonnie << Shirley is to be commended for her work on the 1876 Sangamon Bios.....she will soon have them all online. Isn't that great?! Thanks Shirley. Mary Ann >>
Without Mary Ann and Morris none of the above pages would be what they are today. Mary Ann is the one who encouraged me to start putting "stuff" online for both Morgan and Sangamon pages - she personally typed and put much of the material up on all three pages. Morris picked up Morgan and Sangamon when Mary Ann left those pages to give birth to the MAGA page - she's done a marvelous job on it and Morris is doing a super job on the other two. Much thanks and appreciation to these two master "Webmasters".
Morris is the one who deserves the kudos for this book ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary Ann Kaylor" <makaylor@npwt.net> To: <ILMAGA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 16, 2000 7:45 PM Subject: Re: [ILMAGA] New Online > Shirley is to be commended for her work on the 1876 Sangamon Bios.....she > will soon have them all online. Hi. I'm new to this list. I'm researching this family: Charles Augustus Hardwick b 31 Aug 1825 TN (son of Willis Hardwick/Anna Scoggins) d Feb 1901 Greene Co., IL Married first to Mary Jane Adcock 1850 Married 2nd to Mary C. Buckley 1864 Married 3rd to Mary Caroline Grizzle btwn 1864-1887 I am related through Charles' daughter, Sarah C. Hardwick b 19 Jul 1865 in Greene Co., IL. Here's my problem: On Sarah's marraige certificate (1887)to Benjamin Shetterly, she puts Mary Grizzle (Grissle) as her mom. I think her actual biological mom was probably Mary Buckley, because of the marraige date being abt 10 months before Sarah was born. So, who was Sarah's biological mother? I can't find any record of Mary Buckley's death (or info on her parents) or on the marraige of Charles and Mary Grizzle (need to find out her parents, also). The census info is not much help, because it lists Charles and his wife Mary (there were 3 of them, don't know which one is which!). Can anyone help? Thanks. Teri

So there is a Westminster Presb. Church in Springfield. I doubt, though, that my Smith family would have taken the carriage-ride to that city when there was a Presbyterian church in Jacksonville where they lived. I think maybe the person who wrote the obit. made a mistake and my relative (Barbara Smith, wife of Wm. K. McFarland) did in fact belong to the Northminster Church. If anybody on this list is connected with this Church, I would like to get an e-mail address for the Minister or Deacon. I have never seen any reference to Church records in Jacksonville. Does anybody have knowledge of such records or archives ? Thanks to Cheryl for her message, Marion Baker in Newfoundland
