Alton State Hospital was open in the 1920's I think. They took in all types of mental illness - both adult and children. I did volunteer work there when I lived in Alton. There was also a sanitarium on the road between Edwardsville, Illinois and Glen Carbon. I know it was at least that old and was originally built for TB. I know the state hospital is still open - it's on route 140 between Alton and Cottage Hills. Not sure about the one in Edwardsville but will email a relative who lives there and see what information I can find and let you know. Nancy
