Good Morning Lori, I have a few of those myself. I am finding that German Lutheran middle names came from the first names of the baptismal sponsers of that person. In general, the baptismal sponser was someone related or at least close to the family. I bet, if you look at the immediate relations of the parents of JBB, you will find that one of them is named Bernhardt. If you find the baptismal records, you will probably also find that there were more than one sponsor and that this person has more than one middle name.
