Dear David: I started researching the ZAHNER family while I was in Illinois last spring. My sweetheart, Phil Zahner, grew up in Highland (born there, 1942) but knew very little about his father's family. So, we headed to the Latzer Library and I have been digging ever since. Maybe we have a connection here--Do the names Anton and Rosa Hurlimann mean anything to you? These people would have been alive until at least 1904. All I know is that they lived in Marine, that Rosa was the daughter of Phil's great-grandmother, Emma Hotz Doebele Zahner. Emma Hotz b. 1826 or 1828 in Baden, Germany, came to US in 1841. Settled in Saline. Married Jacob Doebele (or Doebelin?) 1847, had 2 children with him (I thinkonly 2), Jacob and Rosa. Her first husband died, and in 1855 she married Lorenz Zahner and had 6 children with him. Their son, Richard, was Phil's grandfather who died in St. Louis in 1932 at the Alexian Brothers Hospital (a sanitarium--he had been committed since 1916--why specifically, we still don't know.) That is why Phil knew so little about his family--nobody talked about his grandfather or whatever his problem was, so nothing about the family history got passed down. Phil has become quite attached to Emma Hotz Doebele Zahner--she seems to have been quite a character. We found her and Lorenz' tombstones in the Catholic cemetary in Grant Fork, close to St. Gertrude's. Sure hope you know something about her daughter, Rosa. She has been somewhat of a missing link. All we know of her is her name. Haven't found any other records on her, only that she is mentioned in Emma's obituary in the Highland Journal, and in the probate records when they settled Emma's estate. Please write back and tell me if this means anything to you.
