    3. Jean Robison, There is a searchable prisoner list for the Civil War prison in Alton. Go to: http://www.altonweb.com You'll see a navigation box at the top of the Alton Page. Open the box and highlight the catagory "Civil War" and click Go That takes you to "Alton In The Civil War" page. Go to the bottom of the page and you'll see an entry for "Confederate Prison and List of Confederate Soldiers" Click on it and it will take you to the page for the Alton Prison On that page, click on "Search Prison Records". Not all the prisoners are listed and some parts are still under construction, but it can be searched. There is a monument in the north part of Alton that bears the names of prisoners who died there, but I'm sure there is probably a list of names on file with the local historical society. The prison site and the monument are listed in the excellent 1999 Visitors Guide the Greater Alton/Twin Rivers Convention & Visitors Bureau sent to me recently. They can be located on the webpage too and you can request the Guide. There is a photo of the monument in the Guide and an old photo of the prison can be seen on the webpage. Just want to point out that the Alton website also has births and obituaries listed.
