Lynn I rember the Illinois Central well living next to railroads A fireman was one who shoveled the coal and kept the boiler pressure up, prior to the diesel electric engines that they have now. One thing the Railroads keep separate records from social security and he wouldn't be listed there. I have never had an occasion to use their records but I understand they are quite thorough and would very informative.
