I think the oldest Catholic Church in Alton is SS Peter and Paul (the Old Cathedral) located on State St. Refering to "Alton, Illinois Illustrated, 1912", the oldest Catholic assembly was initiated in 1840 in Upper Alton. The first chuch was erected in 1843 on Third Street. In 1856 SS Peter and Paul's was completed and it became the Bishop's Cathedral. I think St. Mary's was erected later than 1856.
