Monticello Junior College for Young Women was established in 1838 in Godfrey, Illinois, outside Alton. When Benjamin Godfrey started it I think it was the first school for girls in the midwest. His slogan was "If you educate a man you educate an individual. If you educate a woman you educate a family". It was a very elegant girls school with excellent education. The last two years of "prep school" and the first two years of college were taught. I enjoyed my first two years of college there. Sad to say, it no longer exists. It was bought in 1970 and is now Lewis and Clark Community College.Elinor Borgstedt Erickson
