    1. [ILMADISO-L] 2nd Street in Alton?
    2. Scott Holl
    3. In looking at 1880 census records, I discovered that my g-grandparents had lived on 2nd Street in Alton. I find no 2nd Street on current maps. Could 2nd Street have been renamed Broadway at a later date? The street names that precede my g-grandparents entry were Front St. and Walnut St. Does anybody know where this elusive street may have been? Scott Holl

    3. Yes, Second Street was renamed Broadway which became the main thoroughfare in Alton for some time. Walnut Street no longer exists at its previous location. The streets are numbered streets from Broadway, Third, Fourth, etc. There is no First Street in Alton. 3. As a general follow-up to Scott's request about 2nd Street being the former name of the now Broadway, there are several streets which have changed names through the years. One that comes to mind is the now Royal Street. In former days I believe it had a name which started with the letter "T". My gr-grandparents lived on this street and when it changed to Royal, I learned that they really didn't move at all. This is probably true in towns around the country. Don't think that the family moved when in reality the street name could have been changed and the family was still in the same ol' house. Best bet is when a street doesn't appear on today's map, then locate a map of the town around the period in question. Debbi Geer __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
