Pete, Noticed your post on MILLER...Does you have any Millers' & Smiths' in Mo. and Ark? I have Millers/Smiths in my line but the only connection to Illinois I have is William Miller possibly born in Montgomery Co., Litchfield, Illinois and signed into the Civil War in Greene Co., Illinois...After that, my Millers are mainly found [so far] in the states mentioned above"Mo & Ark"... regards, R bkengrpch@aol.com wrote: Looking for information on Ancestors and Descendants of Washington Temple MILLER. He was born in 1815 Jefferson Co., Kentucky and moved to Alton, Madison Co., IL around 1835. He married Julia SMITH of St. Louis in 1837 and had Addison S. (listed as Andrew S. in 1850 Census), Julia Ann, Sarah M., and Ruth A between 1838-1844. He was remarried to Ruth B. SMITH in 1846 Madison Co. They stayed in Alton until late 1870's, then moved to Chicago. He died in 1887. While in Alton, Washington (W.T.) MILLER was involved with merchant business, lumberyard, banker, real estate (I see he owned and subdivided hundreds of acres in Alton). His son Addison ran Addison S. Miller & Co. which sold trees, shrubs, etc. (Alton newspapers have advertisements). I belive Addison died early (perhaps in Civil War) since WT had grandchildren Harry/Henry Addison & Cora in his house in 1870 and 1880. WT and his grandson Addison had businesses in Chicago as commercial merchants (cheese, fruits, etc.). From articles, I have found that WT Miller was very active in Alton. He was an alderman, on police and fire committes, member/chairman of Tippecanoe Club, director representing state of Illinois in construction of Alton & St. Louis Railroad. Washington's daugher Julia Ann married Samuel Boyd DAVIS in 1858 Madison Co. He was born in Ohio, but lived in Alton from around 1857-1866, the moved to Chicago. He was also a commercial merchant in cheese, fruits, meats, oysters, etc. (as were his sons William T and Samuel Edward DAVIS b:abt 1860 Alton).
