Hayner Library in Alton has volumes of index books on old newspapers articles. If you look up an individual's name in the index books, it will show you what date, page and column the article appears. Most obits can be found in that fashion. The more recent articles are on microfiche in the top drawer of that file cabinet. The library is now working backwards from the present date, so there is a gap where there is no reference to articles, but old articles are in the index books. If I was looking for the name Hapgood, I would go to the H index book , then to Hapgood and all the articles on the Hapgood family, plus the Hapgood Plow Company would be in that index book. Just an example. Would the Hayner library at Alton Square have the same index book?
