    1. Re: [ILMADISO-L] Upper Alton Cemetery

    3. I didn't know that. Do you mean the Greenwood Cemetery out on Route 3 was called the Alton Cemetery or the Alton Cemetery on 5th Street was called the Greenwood Cemetery. Greenwood Cemetery is a Catholic Cemetery. Greenwood Cemetery is actually St. Patrick's. It is located off Route 3. City Cemetery is now Alton City Cemetery and located on 5th Street. St. Joseph's is located across from St. Anthony's hospital on Elm Street, and, of course, Oakwood Cemetery is now Upper Alton Cemetery. 1. [ILMADISO-L] Alton City Cemetery Name Correction
    2. Debbi Geer
    3. My apology for getting two cemetery names mixed up. Thank you Sharlene for questioning the name so quickly so that I may correct myself. Greenwood Cemetery and St. Patrick's Cemetery on IL 3 in Godfrey have been interchanged through the years. Greenwood Lane runs on the west side of the cemetery. Upper Alton Cemetery and Oakwood Cemetery have been interchanged too. Alton City (between Piasa and ?Cherry Streets a few blocks off of Broadway (formerly Second Street) was referred to as Grandview Cemetery years ago. So in turn 3 of the major cemeteries in the Alton/Godfrey area have been known by two names each. Grandview and Greenwood names are rarely used these days.
