    3. I found some letters on microfilm at the Family History Library from George Churchill of Troy to his nephew William Weeks in the Oregon Territory, and George uses the term Sucker or Illinois Sucker. Does anyone know its origin? I assume it's a term like "badger" for Wisconsinites. thanks, Karen

    3. I've heard the expression also. My late mother used to refer to Indiana Hoosiers, Illinois Suckers, and Missouri Pukes. (She was born in St Clair County IL and raised in the St Louis MO area.) I'd be interested in the origin of all 3 names. Hoosier is a familiar term. But the other 2 were news to me. This e-mail is the first time I heard anyone refer to IL Suckers since my mom died years ago.
