Thanks Debbi, The stone was very legible just a few weeks before the person walked the cemetery. What worries me is that it was broken off at the base and I'm wondering if someone might have picked it up before the cemetery was walked. It was small enough that it could even have been obliterated by a rain storm. I know it could have been missed - we almost didn't see it because it was sitting off to the side of the main group of graves. What we would like to know is if someone from the Madison County Genealogical Society might have "rescued" the stone and put it somewhere for safekeeping. The stone reads "Amy...John Hobbs...died Nov. 30(?), 1887. It has clasped hands at the top. I have Morgan's list but it ends in 1881. Nancy Unless someone in the Society did something and didn't tell me (cemetery committee chairperson), I wouldn't know what happened. As you said it was sitting off to the side and it's possible that the person who did the inventory didn't see it. If I were you, I'd contact the Bond Co IL Genealogical Society. I believe that they did an inventory several years ago and you could see if they have it on their list. If not, my guess would be that they too didn't see it in its location. Since the MCGS hasn't published the inventory yet, I'm going to make note and make sure it does get included. The person who supplied the inventory to IL Trails has granted me permission to publish it. He also knows that I'm going to add the information from E E Morgan's diary to make a better inventory so that people will know in the future where their ancestors are buried (with and without a stone).
