Awhile back, there was a post asking about a Railroad Sanitarium in Highland, Illinois. I spoke with my sister, who recalled that the railroad was one of the largest employers in that area for some time, and the term referred to a sanitarium/hospital built or funded by the railroad. Hope this is helpful to you. She recalls hearing about this as a little girl. Although we are from St. Louis, she was more familiar with our relatives in Highland better than I was.
