Hi Does anyone know if there is an index to the 1860 and 1870 Madison County Census. I have been thru 798 pages in 1860 and well into the 1870 Census looking for someone. Cant believe she is not in there. Must have missed her somewhere. Her name is Ellen Lake . In 1860 she would have had a daughter Leola Lake, possible more children and maybe a husband John Lake(doubtful, Civil War). Cant find her in 1870 census either so far. Any help would be appreciated. Diane I tried locating John, Ellen and Leola Lake in the marriage records of IL and the 1860 and 1870 census for Madison Co IL. None of them are listed. Are you sure they were in Madison Co IL? The only other possibility is that they were living with another family (relatives or non-relatives) and therefore would not be in an index if the indexer decided to index the head of household only person.
