Does anyone know if there is an index for the 1855 or 1865 Illinois State census? Thanks, Mimi
Santa brought the Heritage Quest "Germans in the 1870 US Federal Census" CD last year. The search process is rather klunky, and they use a four letter code for birthplace that I haven't found a table of equivalencies for, but the general breakdown looks like this: In the 1870 census there were 4111 heads of households in Madison Co., IL identified as "German". Of these, 1816 or 44% had their birthplaces recorded as either Prussia or Germany. The remaining birthplaces (using the 4 letter code) were: BADE - 489, BAVA - 443, BRAN - 2, BREM - 5, BRUN - 39, FRNK - 1, HAMB - 7, HANO - 493, HCAS - 27, HDAR - 147, HESS - 71, HDEC - 1, LDET - 27, LSCH - 4, MECK - 22, MSCH - 3, MSTR - 1, OLDE - 12, PFAL - 1, POME - 1, RSCH - 1, SALT - 2, SAXO - 117, SCHW - 6, SCOG - 1, SHOL - 22, SILE - 3, SWEE - 7, THUR - 2, WALD - 66, WEST - 6, WURT - 226, UNKN - 23, NCOD - 12, ASEA - 2. I would guess that the last three are "unknown", "no code", and "at sea", bringing the unidentified to 45% of the total. ===== Marsha L.
