Thanks, and you're right, lots of mis-spellings in that era. But, I've investigated David Swett and family and they're not related and the similarity in names just complicates the search. Fortunately none of the first names are the same. These names also appear as Sweat and even Street for one of them in the 1850 census. Another complication is that they were right on the county line with Macoupin and some records are in Madison and some in Macoupin. I received copies of the Madison County marriage ledger for three of these Sweets yesterday from the IRAD depository at Carbondale, Illinois. All three were married by John Bayless and no one else of the 120 marriages listed were married by him so I see that as a definite tie. The folks at that IRAD site have been really helpful so don't forget about them when searching for records. I've been told that they could be on the chopping block in the State budget so we need to help prove them valuable. I would like to hear from anyone who can tell me a little more about John Bayless or Bayles.
