I need help with a brick wall and would appreciate anyone looking over what I've done and see if I'm missing anything. I've been searching for one of my husband's ancestors, Ira Isaac Johnson, born in Alton on 28 Sept 1860. The family story (couple of generations removed) was he might have raised by a relative, possibly a grandmother, and that his original birth name might have been E. Reed. We couldn't make any connection for him to any family for a long time. A few years ago I broke the brick wall and found him in the 1880 census with Matilda Johnson. Unfortunately they were both in another household so that there was no relationship listed. She would have been in her mid- 40's so she could be his mother or grandmother. I was able to trace Matilda and Ira back to the 1870, where they were with other children. Matching names and/or ages sexes, I was able to trace them back to the 1840 census, finding Matilda's husband and then eventually marriage to John Johnson. Since Ira was shortly born after the 1860 census, I can use that to see that all children in the 1850 census were still living with the family. Neither daughter, Ellen (17) and Lucy (16) were married by June when the census was taken. William, the oldest son, (20) was still at home. Those three are the possibilities from this family if Ira was being raised by a grandmother. One of the girls appears to still be at home in the 1865 state census, but it didn't list names. Beyond that, they both disappear completely. I've looked through the marriage records, cemetery records, and searched through census records by first names trying to match possibilities...all without any luck. William fought in the Civil War and I got his pension record filed by his mother, which states that he did not have a wife or children at the time of his death. (Of course, if Ira was his illegitimate son perhaps the family wouldn't acknowlege it.) I have traced the two other brothers in the family, but can't find anything that helps to establish if Ira was a son or grandson in the family. The family is: John Wesley JOHNSN, b. abt 1816 in Virginia. Died "early part of late war" (according to mother's pension record for son Williams) and before the 1865 based on state census records. Married in Albermarle, Virginia on 22 Sept 1836 to: Matilda Jane CRADDOCK, b. abt 1815 in Virginia. Lived in Alton/Upper Alton most of adult life, but was in Mt. Olive, Macoupin, Illinois in 1880. Died. 9 June 1902 in Alton. Buried in Upper Alton. Children: William Craddock Johnson, b. abt 1838 in Illinois. D: 22 June 1872 in Memphis Tennessee. Ellen Johnson, b. abt 1841. no definite record found after 1860 census. Lucy Johnson, b. abt 1843. no definite record found after the 1860 census Ruben Johnson. b. abt 1845. Marries Mattie Hoffman. Traced through the 1880 census. Three children: M. C. Johnson, Nellie Johnson, U. B. Johnson. John Wesley Johnson, b. 29 Feb. 1858 in Alton. Married Louise Ehrler on 5 Nov 1879. (Four children: E. L Johnson, Benjamin Johnson, Bessie Johnson, Louisa Johnson.) John died 27 Aug. 1926 and is buried with his wife and mother in the Upper Alton (Oakwood) Cemetery. ??Ira Isaac Johnson (Is he a son or grandson?) b. 28 Sept. 1860 in Alton. 1880 Census is in Mt. Olive, Macoupin, Illinois with Matilda Johnson. In California by marriage in 1888. Lived in California, New Mexico and Arizona. No records there list his parents. I'm hoping there are bastardy bonds I can check. Can anyone see anything I'm missing that would help me determine who Ira's parents were? I'd appreciate any ideas. Thank you, Gaye Willis
Does any one know if Madison County kept Bastardy Bonds? I just read about them on another site and wondered if this would help my dilemma. If they exist, where are they kept and for what years? I need to determine if an ancestor was a grandson born out of wedlock to a daughter or is really the son and wonder if bastardy bond would help. (See separate posting on Ira Isaac Johnson brickwall if you would be willing to help me think through if there's another approach I can't think of.) Thank you! Gaye Willis

I'm running behind, but not down and out!! I will get it up there, just as soon as I figure out what the devil is going wrong with my connections.. In the mean time... please don't send any large files to me for the moment... I'll let you know when I have things squared away again.. Thanks for your patience and understanding!! I also ran across thL.P. behind the officiant's name on a marriage - it stands for Local Preacher. There is a handy book aimed at genies packed full of legal terms, phrases, and abbrebiations that researchers come across, and from which this information came, titled From A to Zax: A Comprehensive Dictionary for Genealogists & Historians by Barbara Jean Evans. My 3rd edition was written 1995. Hearthside Press in Alexandria, VA is the publisher (a web search should pull them up if interested). I have the following marriage record: Copy of Vital Records of Marriage from Madison County, Illinois this is to Certify That on the 1st day of May A.D. 1851 I joined in Holy Bonds of Matrimony, Mr. Patrick Carroll and Mary Carroll according to the usual custom, and the Laws of Illinois. Given under my hand and seal, this 1st day of May A.D. 1851 James A. Keans (L.P.) Can someone help me as to who James A. Keans is and what L. P. stands for? Both Patrick and Mary are of the Catholic faith and Mary's brother was Father Michael Carroll of Alton Illinois. Might there be records of this marriage in the Catholic Church? How can I find out? Thank you all for any help I might get on this!! Darla Wilson
I found them being married in Madison County with the filing showing on the Illinois Marriage Archives. Put Carroll alone in the bride and grooms surname name and see what comes up. Type Illinois Marriage Archives in your search. It gives the filing info and you can get a copy of the marriage certificate from the State of Illinois if you write to Barb Heflin. She is a very nice person. The marriage records at the SOS office stop at 1900. So I know they have the filings there. Or an abstract, and it should tell you what you want to know. Rev. Everts

Also check the Federal Bureau of Land Management for Ezekiel Davis, a free site. You can search for and download exact copies of land deeds for lands bought directly from the government. Ezekiel Davis purchased 5 plats in Madison County in 1828, 1833, 1839 (2 plats) and 1840. This is your Ezekiel Davis because all the plats are in Township 6 North, Range 7 West in Madison County. Again, I know this doesn't relate to who his parents are, but this is an interesting thing to have for your records. Sharon, going from your e-mail and the replies, I believe this is your Ezekiel Davis, based on birth date: Ezekiel Davis - 31 MAY 1790, Salem, New Jersey If this is the correct birth date for your Ezekiel, then you now have the county and state and you can request information from there. It is highly doubtful that there would be birth records for that time period, but you may be able to find marriage records, or church records such as baptism This information, by the way, is from the LDS's free genealogy site. Website is: http://www.familysearch.org/ In "Centennial history of Madison County, Illinois, and its people : 1812 to 1912" by William T. Norton, Evansville, Ind.: Unigraphic, 1970, 1363 pgs., there is a one-line reference to Ezekiel Davis on page 590 regarding Omph-Ghent Township: "Other early settlers prior to 1830, were Charles Tindall, Ezekiel Davis and Samuel H. Denton." In "Gazetteer of Madison County " by James T. Hair, Evansville, Ind.: Unigraphic, 1973, 293 pgs., the following one-line reference to Ezekiel Davis is found under "Madison County Directory" on page 590: "Davis, Ezekiel early settler, died 1863, 6-7 Omphghent." 6-7 refers to Township 6 North, Range 7 West. There is also a William F. Davis listed in the same township, at Lambs Point post office. The above were found through the Heritage Quest databases, an on-line, searchable service. Some libraries offer free, 24-hour, at-home access to Heritage Quest if you have a library card. St. Louis City and St. Louis County libraries offer this; at one time, Edwardsville and Collinsville libraries also offered it. Check with your library. For more information on Heritage Quest, look on the IL-Gen Web site under "Madison County Libraries" - information can be found under "St. Louis City Library" and "St. Louis County Library" (the only two that I knew for sure offered access) - scroll down to the bottom of the each page and look for "3. Online Databases." The ILGenWeb site is http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmadiso/ I know this doesn't directly answer your query as to who his father was, but every little bit of information may lead to something further on.
