    1. Re: ILMADISO-D Digest V04 #171
    2. The Milton part of Alton was part of Wood RIver township. At some point in the late 50' or early 60's it was annexed into the city of Alton. By that time, Upper Alton had long been officially part of Alton city. There was an area referred to as Upper Alton, where the businesses were. I guess the boundaries were pretty fuzzy and in the mind of the beholder, but we always referred to the area off Milton Road as the Milton area, and the business area off Brown and Main/Washington as Upper Alton. It may be that everything west of Milton Rd, which would include Fernwood, was already part of the city, and everything on the other side was still unannexed when my parents bought their house. 2. I would certainly put all that info in your notes, just to make sure it doesn't get lost. The answer may depend on the date you're talking about. I have a vague memory of someone on this list talking about the time period when the various towns of Alton, Upper Alton, and Wood River changed boundaries. Upper Alton may have been or may still be a neighborhood, not a distinct town. But neighborhoods are important to identifying where a location is. And an address may have been in Wood River at one time and in Upper Alton at another and in Alton at yet another. You may want to check back in the Archives to see if you can find old messages from someone who lives there and can help you out more than I can! Looking at current maps in my Rand McNally Atlas, and the church directory of a Wood River church from the early 1990s, I don't think Upper Alton currently exists as a legal entity now. But I know it once did. Doris Waggoner Seattle -- "Kent & Tracy" <cdr2002@mchsi.com> wrote: My GG-grandfather death certificate list his "Place of Death" as 3304 Fernwood Ave, Wood River, IL. 3. Dorris Thanks for the reply,, After your reply I checked the 1930 Census, it list him in Wood River Township. That part of Alton is in Wood River Township. If I use a magnifying glass after Wood River, in very small print four choices, Village, City, Township, or Road District. 3. I found my great-grandfather, Raphael Berkhart (it's really Burkhart) listed in the book "Naturalization & Intentions of Madison County, Illinois - An Index 1816-1900." I don't think the fees listed in the book are correct anymore. Can someone tell me the cost for a copy of a naturalization from the County Clerk's Office in Edwardsville? Also, will they accept a check or do I have to send a money order? Marilyn Lane

    2. What part of Madison county do you live in. I am doing research in mostly Marine and some of the small towns in vicinity. If you are near there I have some questions about a few cemeteries in the area as well as finding which churches my family may have attended so I can contact them for some parish records. They appear to have been Catholic. Let me know, THanks Marlena

    3. Hi Jane - I do a lot of obits research using the IL Newspaper Project holdings of the (institution formerly known as the IL State Historical Library - - now known as the) new Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library (and Museum... but the Museum won't be open until late Spring 2005). This link shown below (also posted on my website of www.mollx.com) http://web.library.uiuc.edu/asp/inp/mergeddatabase/search_form.asp - Takes you to the search engine screen of the searchable database of the IL Newspaper Project holdings - - it's a great tool, and gives you the info as to where the appropriate newspapers might be held - AND their date-spans of publication! If any results list the IL State Historical Library - (now the A. Lincoln Presidential Library) = you could either contact them for an obit search (I think it's free for IL-state residents; $10 for non-IL-residents..??) - OR someone in this area (like me?) - could do the obits research for you. My fees are on my website, if that would be of any help): molly Molly Kennedy P O Box 5785 Springfield, IL 62705 www.mollx.com Genealogy - Confusing the dead, and annoying the living.
