    3. Thanks Maryjane, Yes, I have a printout of the land document. They're so awesome, with the actual signatures! In the 1845 State Census Silas Sweet is in Madison County and is in the right neighborhood. Of course it doesn't give us much information. Yes, I have a copy of that little book also. Unfortunately when it gets to him, we only get his name and dob. The census figures for Vermont give us some good info, like he probably lived with his parents even after he married. And we have a copy of his father's will & probate and it helped identify him. We have lots of good information, enough to make us sure we're on the right track, but can't find a record of his or Mercy's death anywhere! That seems a little strange in the time period of 1845-1860 when several of their adult children were in the same area. He had sold his Greene County land so that's no help. A cousin checked the Greene County microfilm for a probate file, no luck. Oh woe is me, but thank you. You never know when you're going to be the one to pass on the "key." 3. Does anyone have access to records for Madison County that may help me solve some important mysteries? These folks are "highly likely" to be my link to the Mayflower as well as a Revolutionary War veteran. Silas Sweet was born in Vermont or Massachusetts about 1777. Any information would be appreciated but what we really need is probate records for Silas Sweet (died 1845-1850) or Mercy Sweet (died 1850-1860). We also don't know where any of these folks were buried.

    1. Parking Innovation at St. Louis Public Library
    2. Smith, Kathleen
    3. Woo-Hoo, Folks, We now have free parking during the week! (Remember, parking is free at the meters all day on Saturdays). Here's how it works. The number of spaces is fairly limited - hopefully, if it is a big success, more spaces will be made available. The spaces are in the large parking lot on the corner of 15th & Olive. If you have a handicapped sticker or tag, use spaces numbered 58-60. The other spaces are numbered 32-44 in the center section of the parking lot. Once you have parked your car, stop at the issue desk (just inside each entrance - where you would check out books), and you will be given a parking slip. When you are ready to leave the library, you will turn your parking slip in for a token to exit the parking lot. The slip/token system was arranged to prevent misuse of the spaces by people paying parking tickets or doing other business in the area. If you get into the lot and can't find a designated space, park somewhere else and go into the Central-West building right next to the parking lot. There is a guard just inside the door to resolve the problem. Signs will be put up presently. So come down, park for free in a closed lot, and enjoy our outstanding services, staff <g>, and collections. Please call us at (314)539-0385 if you have any questions. Sincerely, Kathy Smith Librarian, History & Genealogy St. Louis Public Library

My grandfather, his brothers, and his father settled in the Edwardsville/Granite City area in the late 1880's. They originated in Bohemia, now Czechoslovakia. I can find little or no information on him other than that published in a newspaper that was reporting attendance in school and school functions. There should be a birth of another son after his mother and another brother arrived. They later moved to St. Louis, MO. The name I am searching for is Zdvoracek. 2. Darlene Burzynski
    3. Dear List Members, I am new to the list and hope someone can give me information on a Mrs. Elizabeth Lander who married George Gass 20 April 1872 in Madison County. I am trying to learn to whom Elizabeth was first married. My interest is in the LANDER family. My great grandmother was Mary LANDER who was born in 1834 in the Rheinpfalz . Christian Wolf and Mary's children were baptized in the Mascoutah St. John Evangelical Church. The baptisms took place in the early 1870's. I am searching for any LANDER in the area at that time in order to learn more and establish a connection to Mary Lander and her ancestors. Thank you for any help that you can offer. Darlene

    1. Investigating a homicide in Alton, IL in 1921
    2. Can anyone out there give me any advice on where to start researching a murder that occurred in 1921? I recently received my g-grandfather's death certificate and it indicated that his death was a homicide. I am interested in learning more about the circumstances surrounding his death. His name was John Kaiser, his wife was Maggie Kaiser, the date of death was April 3, 1921. The certificate is signed by an Edward Mercer of Granite City, Ill and John was buried in New Methodist on April 7, 1921. The undertaker is listed as a JE Mercer Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I am stationed overseas and have only internet to do research/communicate. Thank you for your assistance -- Le'Royce "Not what we gain, but what we give measures the worth of the life we live"                  -Mrs. Zelma Thompson
