    2. The exact location - algon the Bivens Road on the way to Dorsey. There is nothing there today! The house and barns that were there thru my youth were torn down and it is all farm ground now. It would be located at the southwest corner of Bivens & Renken Road, and would be apaproximately 1/4 mile south and 1/2 mile west of the intersection. Barbara

    2. Karen, Most of the people buried there were of the Dorsey family. However, their were a few Yeager/Yagers buried there. The Dorsey family moved the tombstones to the Moro Cemetery. Some of the Yeagers buried there have a stone in the Moro Cemetery too. Who are you looking for? Barbara Hitch Edwardsville, IL

    3. I find a "Sweet Creek" on a very old map of Madison County in Omnighent Twp. It isn't shown in my very detailed 1991 Illinois Atlas & Gazetteer. Anyone know anything about Sweet Creek? Could it have been named for a family named Sweet that lived in the area around 1850? Karen

    3. Okay, all that helps. I'm looking for several Sweets. I know that Lafayette Sweet's wife's first husband John Moore was buried at Locust Grove in the summer of 1851. Because of the family connection and the location I wondered if that's why I'm not finding Silas Sweet, Mercy Sweet, or Maria Sweet. I suspect their graves must not have been marked and so far I haven't been able to find any death records or probate. Lafayette's wife was a Cooper and the Coopers are buried at Cooper-Sanner but their records are pretty good and no Sweets. I "think" the Sweets were always along the Macoupin/Madison County line in Moro so not real close to Locust Grove. I'm also looking for a William Smith who is my direct ancestor who married Eliza Sweet. She later married Obadiah Mize but I don't find her at Hand-Mize so William Smith and Eliza Mize are missing also. There might be a Mary Sweet Stewart with these folks also. I know it's a shot in the dark but I sure appreciate the info I've received so far. All of these would be in the 1850s and 1860s I think except Silas Sweet who was between 1845 and 1850. 2. A transcription of the 1820 federal census of Madison County, Illinois is available at this site. http://ftp.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/il/madison/1820/ . The census lists both free persons of color and slaves. There were few slaves in Madison County in 1820. The Genweb census project is an ongoing project with additional census from the various states and census added from time to time. Tom

    3. There's an explanation of the 1818 State Census at accessgenealogy. They did have listings for free persons of color and another for slaves. I didn't find a James Dabbs in the Madison County listing. The 1820 Federal Census abstracts can be downloaded at Genealogy.com from their "How-to" section. The second page has the listings for free persons of color, etc. Do you have access to the actual census image? James Dabbs is shown to have 9 young boys, 2 young girls, one adult male, one adult female. The first 11 columns are for free whites, the 12th column is Foreigners not naturalized (nothing entered for James Dabbs) and the next column with the number "5" is for "People in Agriculture." It shows no persons of color, free or slave for James Dabbs. There was also an 1820 State Census but I've never seen any of it. Some info available at the Illinois Archives site. "Each county return includes name of county and for each household name of head of household and numbers of free white males twenty-one years of age and older, other white inhabitants, slaves and servants, and free Negroes and mulattoes. Returns are included for 18 or 19 counties existing at that time: (It then lists the counties, including Madison. Only Edwards is missing.) Sounds like the listing you have might be the 1820 State Census but that doesn't really make sense if the Federal Census doesn't match. Looks like to me they just messed up in the interpretation. One free white male and eleven free white individuals equals twelve PEOPLE and that does match the 1820 Federal census. I think someone messed up and added 12 free persons of color who didn't exist. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judy" <judygriffin@tds.net> To: <ILMADISO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 08, 2005 6:50 PM Subject: [ILMADISO-L] 1818, 1820 Madison Co. 3. I have found that many times the last names are badly mispelled. If you have acess to that census you can go through the township you think they might have been in. I find that even though you use the similar name search it never ever comes up with the mispellings that I have found for my family. Good luck. You might search the county with just first names plus birth states. Marie --- Karen <gtskjs@mvn.net> wrote: >> You all were so helpful with the Sweets, now here's >> another mystery. 3. Thanks. I hadn't seen the actual 1840 census but with the numbers you provided I could access the image on HeritageQuest. The members of the household are an exact match to who I thought should be there. That's very reassuring. I'll keep the other information around although right now it doesn't look like they match.
