Hello: I understand the 1850 Mortality Index shows the death of William Montgomery, 60-some years, in Madison County. Was Wm Montgomery the same gentleman who joined General Whiteside, and eight others, in the Indian chase, following the killings of Mrs. Reagan and the Moore children? <fontfamily><param>Times</param><bigger> At three o'clock in the morning a messenger was dispatched with the tidings to Fort Russell. At dawn of day the scene of tragedy was sought, and the bodies gathered for burial. They were buried the same day, in three graves, carefully dug, with boards laid beneath, beside, and above the bodies. There were no men to make coffins. The news soon spread, and it was not long before Gen. Whiteside, with nine others, gave pursuit. Among the number were James Preuitt, Abraham Preuitt, Jame Stockden, Wm. Montgomery, Peter Wagoner and others. <bigger>Any information about William Montgomery would be appreciated. </bigger>Tom Davis Oceanside, California </bigger></fontfamily>

Edward FOUNTAIN was born circa 1778 in Virginia. His parents were Joseph & Mary (Goode) FONTAINE. Edward is listed on the 1810 Christain County Kentucky census as Edward FOWNTIN with a wife, 2 daughters & 1 son. He is listed on the 1818/1820 Madison County Illinois census with 20 people in his residence, 12 over 21 & 8 children. In 1816 in Madison County Illinois he applied for a permit to open a tavern and he served on a jury in 1820 there. In 1830 he was on the Madison County Missouri census. In 1850 we found him on the Wayne County Illlinois census at age 72, with wife Elizabeth age 41, daughter Ariminta age 13, son Granville age 10 & son McDonald age 4. Also on the 1850 Wayne County Illinois census were Joseph FOUNTAIN age 42 b circa 1808 KY, Henry FOUNTAIN age 27 b circa 1823 MO, and Pleasant Edward FOUNTAIN age 21 b 1829 Madison County Illinois. On the 1860 Wayne County Illinois census only Henry FOUNTAIN's widow Elizabeth & children Mary A, Louisa & Stephen were listed. We know Pleasant FOUNTAIN married to Melvina TUCKER moved to Missouri, Arkansas and then to Kansas. We do not know where the others went. We need proof that Joseph, Henry & Pleasant were Edward's sons & if not we need help finding their parents. The court house in Wayne County Illinois burned down in 1886 so locating records is a problem. We are stuck in our research on Edward FOUNTAIN and are asking for help from anyone who has informaiton on him, his wives, and his ancestors. We will gladly share any information we have.

Hello, My name is Sharon Hagler and am new to this list and look forward to what info I may be able to learn. For now I would like to post my first query: I am trying to verify the death date and name of my 4th Gr. Grandmother. The information I was sent said her name was Dorthy Shankle. Dorthy was born abt. 1760 in Wilkes Co., NC and was married to John Hagler Jr. on abt. 1780 in NC and then was supposed to have died at Jarvis Twp., Madison Co., IL on Jan. 21, 1820. What I would like to know is, are there any cemetery records for Jarvis Twp. or Madison Co. that have been indexed and if so and anyone on this list has access to them, would they be willing to look this up for me. Or can anyone tell me of cemeteries in the area and whom I may be able to write to for info. Also if anyone has any books of bios/history on early Madison Co., I would love it, if they could do lookups for the names of HAGLER, SHANKLE/SHANKLIN, and BAKER and let me know what they find. Thanks very much for any information anyone may be able to provide me with...Sharon Hagler =======================Sharon Hagler======================= Visit my Home Page at: http://www.webpak.net/~shagler/index.htm Home Page E-Mail: mailto:shagler@micron.net =========================================================

Hi Madison Rooters, This ia a VERY long shot, but I will give it a try. Im looking for information on my ancestor JOSEPH WASHINGTON (WOOLSEY) ESTEP. He was found living with a farmer for a short time in Madison, ILL. Here is what I have on him: Born 4/5/1832 About 1838 bound out to relatives (Hammonds or Ingrim) in St. Louis hotel business 1842 left to live with a farmer in Madison Co, ILL, given room and board for work Summer of 1847 goes to Alton, Ill to join army (Mexican war, 125 ILL Cavalry, independant company under Josiah Little) My question is this; Does anyone have a Joseph W. Estep living with one of their ancestors on any of the census records from that time. He would have missed the 1840 and 1850 census, but perhaps some other record would have him. I think that he was living with some relative who was a farmer in Madison Co. Also, do any of you have a roster or regimental history of the 125 Cavalry from Alton, ILL during the Mexican War? Its a REAL long shot, but if this rings a bell with anyone, I would love to hear from you. Thanks again!! Richard Beckman Bunky187@Aol.Com

An Aaron Etheridge also married a Jane Lamb in Madison Co. in 1835. Would this be the same Aaron? I am trying to find Aaron's parents. Aaron was born in Tn. in ca 1815. Moved to Illinois and then to Laclede Co. Missouri in 1850 and his wife and children were in the Jackson Co., Il. census in 1860. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hi Everyone, I was wonder if someone could do a look up and photo copy of an article that appeared in the "Alton Telegraph" about 2 months ago. My Grandmother, Lorena (Banfield) Dobson, died in the 1973 flood in Grafton Illinois. She was only 56 years old, and died because of the lack of emergency response, during that crisis. She had a heart attack, while walking to work, along an unflooded area along the bluff's. When the "medical boat" got to her, they found that their oxygen tank was empty. It was at least, 15 minutes before they got her on the oxygen, and she died a few hours after that. The article in the "Alton Telegraph" was about the 25th anniversary of the "flood of 1973" and the only casualty, my grandmother. Is anyone familiar with this article, or in the area that can get me a copy? I would gladly reimburse any one for the photo copies. Thanks, Carol
I received the following from Rick << Frank, Sorry for the misinformation. I had another e-mail name, but it has been canceled and used by another family member. If you can't see my new name, it is rllach@aol.com. Please feel free to contact me if you have a need for look-ups in Alton. I live near there, and am planning to visit within the next week or so. I'll let you know if I can find anything out for you. Also, can you post my address to the list group. My old address is invalid, and I haven't subscribed with my new ISP yet. Thanks. Rick L. >>
