The main public library (downtown)in Alton has a room set aside for history and fenealogy. There are quite a few city directories there. The Alton Evening Telegraph has been publishing since the mid 1800's and should also have some information Dick Neumann neumannr@gte.net > -----Original Message----- > From: DRWGen@aol.com [mailto:DRWGen@aol.com] > Sent: Sunday, September 27, 1998 11:41 AM > To: ILMADISO-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Any suggested Madison Co. research sites? > > > Please forgive the subject question re where to do genealogical > research in > Madison Co. I received in the mail a business card from a Pat Huck e-mail Judith@APCI.NE who said she does research in the Missouri and Illinois area and specializes in German genealogy.
Hello all - I'm looking for someone to help me with some info on my ancestor Jacob ANDRES. He was born in Switzerland in abt 1839. I am told there is a Jacob Andres listed in the 'Naturalization & Intentions, Madison Co., IL, 1816-1900' publication. I'm told the source code for this is 8368, & source page# is 3. There should be two listinmgs for Jacob Andres, one for the year 1860 & one for the year 1892. Jacob Andres married a girl from IL, her name was 'Eliza'. Their 1st child, Perry Washington Andres, was born Dec 1864, supposedly in Madison Co., IL. Could someone also look at the 'Madison Co., IL Birth Record Index, 1850-1879' for me, please? I believe the Madison Co. Genealogical Society has these publications. If someone could find 'my' Jacob Andres on these publications, I want to purchase them from the society. Thank you, Tammy Lawless tlawless@oio.net
Please forgive the subject question re where to do genealogical research in Madison Co. I just learned about this list and this is my 3rd day as a subscriber. I'm hoping someone has saved the answers to my "newbie" question and will forward them to the list again. >From the excellent Madison Co. web page at (http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmadiso/index.htm) I learned about the Madison Co. Genealogy Soc. (http://ns.plantnet.com/~mcgs/) and the Edwardsville Public Library at 112 S. Kansas, in Edwardsville. I have two days this coming Fri. & Sat. (Oct. 2 & 3) that I'll be able to visit this area. I know it is presumptuous to assume I'll find everything interesting in two days but some of you may be able to suggest where to concentrate my too short time. What information sources would there be in Alton? Would I be more likely to find records of interest in St. Louis? There are two families of interest to me that lived in Madison Co. One was the family of Samuel E. MCGREGORY who apparently moved to Alton (from MA) sometime after the 1850 census. He is listed in a Madison Co. history as a County Surveyor in 1857. The only Alton city directory I've found is for 1858 and he is the Alton City Engineer. Where would other Alton City Directories be located? His name appears in an advertisement in the Weekly Madison Press of 15 Sept. 1858. Where are microfilms of this paper so I can make a copy? He and his family are listed in the 1860 census, in Alton, but with a number of name errors. Sometime in the 1850's he apparently married a Matilda BUSCH. Where would I locate a marriage record for them? Matilda (Busch) MCGREGORY apparently died 4Apr1861. Where would I locate her death certificate and her cemetery listing? On 7Aug1862 Samuel MCGREGORY joined the 97th Illinois Infantry Regiment. I have all his military and pension papers. After the war he lived and worked in St. Louis. I believe his 1st wife Matilda was a daughter of Henry & Elizabeth BUSCH. Henry, a female his age, and three young females appear in the 1840 census in "Marine Settlement." How may I locate the property on which he farmed? I have checked the online Illinois land ownership records and the Henry Busches listed are all in other counties. In the 1850 census however, only Elizabeth and children appear. How and where could I learn what happened to Henry and when? Where can I locate the death and cemetery records for Henry and Elizabeth BUSCH? I would be very please to receive any suggestions and thoughts you have on how I can maximize my minimum about of time in Madison Co. Don Wester in MN

I am wondering if there is anyone on this list whom can tell me if there is a book of any sort that has been indexed of early IL. marriages, specifically Madison Co.. I am trying to find marriage records of a Mary (Polly) HAGLER whom married a Ransom MILAN/MILAM/MILLEN. This marriage was supposed to have taken place in 1820 in Madison Co., IL. I also am looking for the marriage of Anne HAGLER to a Andrew BLACK. This marriage also was supposed to have taken place in 1820 in Madison Co., IL.. In the 1820 Census of Madison Co., is listed at RIDGE PRAIRIE: Ransom, MILAN and next to him is listed Andrew BLACK. I got these records at the Family History Center off the fiche (don't know if the spelling is correct.). It does not list how many is in the households of these men, it just has them as being at Ridge Prairie in 1820.. Listed also in 1820 Census of Madison Co. on the fiche is John Hagar, Sr. at APPLE CREEK, which is listed right before RIDGE PRAIRIE. I think it might be possible that this is supposed to be John Hagler, as the 2 HAGLER women whom married the Ransom MILAN/MILAM/MILLEN and Andrew BLACK were daughters of a John HAGLER.. If anyone knows of any indexed marriage records for early Madison Co., and if there is anyone whom knows of any info on the communites or areas of APPLE CREEK and RIDGE PRAIRIE, I would really like to hear from you.. Also I would be interested in knowing why the 1820 Census for Madison Co. on the fiche does not show how many were in the households for the communities of APPLE CREEK and RIDGE PRAIRIE..There are also some other communties on the 1820 Census, that also only have the name of persons and not how many are living in these households.. Thanks in advance for any help..Sharon HAGLER =======================Sharon Hagler======================= Visit my Home Page at: http://www.webpak.net/~shagler/index.htm Home Page E-Mail: mailto:shagler@micron.net =========================================================
Dear David: I started researching the ZAHNER family while I was in Illinois last spring. My sweetheart, Phil Zahner, grew up in Highland (born there, 1942) but knew very little about his father's family. So, we headed to the Latzer Library and I have been digging ever since. Maybe we have a connection here--Do the names Anton and Rosa Hurlimann mean anything to you? These people would have been alive until at least 1904. All I know is that they lived in Marine, that Rosa was the daughter of Phil's great-grandmother, Emma Hotz Doebele Zahner. Emma Hotz b. 1826 or 1828 in Baden, Germany, came to US in 1841. Settled in Saline. Married Jacob Doebele (or Doebelin?) 1847, had 2 children with him (I thinkonly 2), Jacob and Rosa. Her first husband died, and in 1855 she married Lorenz Zahner and had 6 children with him. Their son, Richard, was Phil's grandfather who died in St. Louis in 1932 at the Alexian Brothers Hospital (a sanitarium--he had been committed since 1916--why specifically, we still don't know.) That is why Phil knew so little about his family--nobody talked about his grandfather or whatever his problem was, so nothing about the family history got passed down. Phil has become quite attached to Emma Hotz Doebele Zahner--she seems to have been quite a character. We found her and Lorenz' tombstones in the Catholic cemetary in Grant Fork, close to St. Gertrude's. Sure hope you know something about her daughter, Rosa. She has been somewhat of a missing link. All we know of her is her name. Haven't found any other records on her, only that she is mentioned in Emma's obituary in the Highland Journal, and in the probate records when they settled Emma's estate. Please write back and tell me if this means anything to you.
