I am searching STRAUB and SCHAEFFER (SCHAEFER). Straub's came in 1854 and Schaeffer's came in 1866. They lived in Marine until 1888. They had 7 children there. Re the "Marine" versus "Marinetown" question I suspect one refers to the village and the latter to the township. One of my BUSCH ancestors (Matilda BUSCH) is listed in the 1850 census as being in "Marine Settlement," which I'd assume was another attempt to distinguish between the two names. Maybe we genealogy word purists should avoid the use of the word "town" because it has too many varied legal and social meanings. My cemetery question: Less than two miles south of the village of Marine (in Section 28) is a well kept cemetery out in a field which is contains some of my BUSCH ancestors. It is shown on the USGS quadrangle map as the "Marine Cem." which is NOT correct according to a cemetery list found in the Edwardsville library. No onsite signage either, but the list says this cemetery is the "St. Elizabeth Catholic Cemetery." In the library are at least nine volumes of cemetery lists done by the very busy Madison County Gen. Soc. but none of them list THIS cemetery. QUESTION: Who has the list of "residents" for the St. Elizabeth Catholic Cemetery? (No, I couldn't find a nearby Catholic church with that name.) Thank you. DW in MN
Deb I have relatives that came from Marine and have never heard it referred to as Marine Town .Still have friends that live there,I will ask them. I would be interested in any surnames you have from Marine . Dave
I looked in the Illinois Atlas & Gaxetteer and only found Marine. Perhaps locals referred to it as Marine Town to distinguise between the town and the rest of the Township which is Marine. In reply to what researches have to have to charge a fee. A Certified researcher is just that certified as having training in researching. But I can tell you that a person does not have to a certified anything to do paid research. I have done paid research, while I am not certified in any way, I have 17 years experience, a BA in history specializing in research. If you are thinking of going with a paid researcher, I personaly think the best course is to see what that person can do and ask for references from people they have worked for. Until you get to know your paid researcher, I'd start kinda slow and see what they can deliever before sending them lots of money. Jeana
I knew many ladies in the DAR in the 70's who went to Washington, DC and took classes for a week at the Smithsonian and than I think they were registered Genealogists. I took 1/2 day with a National Archives during that time and it was wonderful. So that is the only one I know that has schooling behind it. However I guess if anyone has been at it for a lot of years and really know how to cut though and find just what they need they could call them selves professional. I find that with a lot of it -- it is good guesses. Anyway that is my 2 cents worth -- and that it more than like rated a little high.

I have a question about the paid genealogy researchers. I know it's probably a crazy question, but I just have to ask it. What does one have to have in order to "get paid" for doing research - a certificate or some sort, or just a general interest?

Subject: Madison, IL Page Date: Tue, 6 Oct 1998 13:52:42 -0500 From: "Jennifer Hammer" <jhammer@southwind.net> I am searching for information on my great grandfather's family. I would like to find him on the 1860 census of Madison Co. but don't know who to contact. His name was Bradley Finley Hawley of Alton, IL born ca. 1852. His father was Hezekiah Finley Hawley but I am not sure of his mother's name. Hezekiah was a judge in Madison Co. around 1837 I think. Can you help me or direct me to the person who can? Thank you.
