    3. I'm looking for anyone who might have information on my DEFOREST line. Sometime between 1860 and 1880 George DEFOREST, I think, went to Madison Co. Eventually his father George DEFOREST Sr, went to live with him and from what I know, died there. The 1880 census lists an Edgar DEFOREST age 34, a wife Martha, age 25, and Edgar DEFOREST Jr, age 0. George Jr. had a son Edgar, and I believe this Edgar is indeed his son. I would appreciate any information that would help me pinpoint where in Madison County my DEFOREST family may have settled. 2. I am looking for a record of my grandmother's birth she was born 28 Jul. 1909 in Granite City, IL. Her name was Mae/Mabel/Melaine NICHOLAS her parents were Gustav and Katherine nee PESHA/PECHA. I am not sure of my grandmothers given name she went by all three at different times. In my county we have a birth index in the library for the years 1860 to1920 it gives name date of birth and parents. I was wondering if Madison County had anything like this and if so could someone do a lookup for me? Tha nk you, Nan cy Conrad

    3. Sue, I don't have a Meyer connection to Becker, but my maiden name is Becker. My father was born in St. Louis, all of his brothers and sisters. I can't find his family prior to 1910. I think they were all aliens who simply appeared and began to reproduce.! At any rate, my g grandfather was John Becker. My g Grandmother was Henrietta ????? according to my grandfather's death certificate. They were in the dairy business. My grandfather was George John Becker. I was going to point you to my homepage but Geocities is doing a number on me this morning. I don't have my Becker info back up but I do have my most wanted ancestor page which is all about a Henrietta Becker. I think this is the Henrietta that was married to John. the address is http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/7102 I would appreciate hearing from you especially if you THINK we might connect. 3. It's called Haynor Public Library and has several locations, (Youth) 401 State Street, Alton IL 62002 (618) 462--0651, (Adult) 326 Belle Street, Alton (618) 462-0651 and a (Branch) at 201 Alton Square, Alton (618) 463-1276. I'm not sure where the records would be located, the original building is the one on State Street, but it appears from the phone book that it is now only for youth. I'd try the Belle Street building. 3. Dear Madison Netters- It would help a lot for those of us who are busy if the person making a reply would Snip off most of the original message- This is especially helpful when the original question was a long one. Might as well take this opportunity to put my Newman family name out there- looking for info on the earliest days of Madison county, especially Wood River- that's the area I am most interested in learning more about. Any help appreciated. Thanks, Olivia in Pennsylvania

    1. Marine
    2. Dorothy Falk
    3. "Illinois Place Names" compiled by James N. Adams, 1969, 977.3 in our library, agrees with what others have been saying: Marine was first known as Marine Prairie, probably referenced in 1882 history, Pg 45. Marine Settlement post office was established 4/27/1835. That post office changed to Marine on 9/15/1851. Marine Township was named for the village.
