Howdy Folks: My Stobbs family records show my gggrandfather John Stobbs living in Alton circa 1850 - 1860. I have just found that two other Stobbs' William and Thomas were living in Highland, IL in 1860. I do have a William and a Thomas Stobbs in my tree, they were the eldest sons of John Stobbs. However, my records show they never came to the US. If someone has access to the 1860 census I ask to please check and find their ages and birth places of their parents. Any help is gratefully appreciated and in return I will do lookups on the new LDS CD's. I have both the Vitals Record Index for the British Isles and the Vital Records for North America. Thanks Again, David E. Stobbs Burlington, WI dstobbs@wi.net Researching Stobbs, Burgeson, Handyside, Gaukrodger, Canaday

Monticello Junior College for Young Women was established in 1838 in Godfrey, Illinois, outside Alton. When Benjamin Godfrey started it I think it was the first school for girls in the midwest. His slogan was "If you educate a man you educate an individual. If you educate a woman you educate a family". It was a very elegant girls school with excellent education. The last two years of "prep school" and the first two years of college were taught. I enjoyed my first two years of college there. Sad to say, it no longer exists. It was bought in 1970 and is now Lewis and Clark Community College.Elinor Borgstedt Erickson

I believe that my great Aunt, Amelia Sanford was living with a daughter in a trailer court in Collinsville, IL when she died in the early 1970's I think. Her daughters were Marie b: 1908, Frida b: abt 1912, Vacal b: abt 1915 and Gertrude b: abt 1918. Any help or guidance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Hi, I have discovered (with the help of a subscriber) that Monticello College in Godfrey was bought by Lewis and Clark Community College in 1970. Monticello College for Women was founded in 1838 and my gggrandmother was enrolled there sometime around the 1850s. I have not found an email address to ask if they have old records. Thanks for all the help. Shaunee Power
Monticello college is located in Godfrey, north of Alton. Am I justnuts, or is there a college on the road from Calvary Cemetery to Edwardsville? Moticello? Valerie Stagaman
Hi, I wonder if anyone knows anything about a Monticello College that was in Alton, Madison County around the 1850s. Benjamin and Dudley Bourland supposedly sent their sister, Mary Albina Bourland Carey to the college around then. She was married in 1856 to William Bennett Carey from Hamilton County, IL and dropped out of school thus assuring a break with her family that lasted her lifetime. I also wonder if anyone has a copy of the 1850 Madison County census and can check for any Bourlands. Thanks very much for the help. Shaunee Power
