Jeana, Thanks a bunch for the look-up! Trying to figure out where "Herman" fits in the picture. I've always had him as "Henry." Grampa Graves told me in the 1950s that his mother's name was Lue Rena. On her gravestone, the spelling is Lieuranna. On Mon, 23 Nov 1998, Evelyn Bachand wrote: > I have Lourina's death certificate. They have the name as Sourena instead > of Lourena. They do not have her husband, mother, or father listed on > certificate. I did find where Lourina and Franklin A. Dunbar were buried. Evelyn, about the spelling of Lourina - my great-grandmother's (Lue Rena GILES GRAVES) name was similar. I have found it spelled a variety of ways. In the 1950s when I received my first bible with the family tree in it and was filling it out, my grampa told me his mother was Lue Rena. I later found it spelled Lou Rena and Lourina. I found her grave a few years ago. Her name is spelled Lieuranna. She was born in Monroe Co TN in 1843 and died in Greene Co MO in 1914. In the TN census it was spelled differently each time. Jeana, Do you see a SLOCUM or a BOYD in your directory? Thanks, Kevin
Evelyn, I just noticed you said her cousin's father was Robert E. Selph. Is that Lourina's brother? If so, you might want to get death certificates for Robert (if he died in the area also) since it would hopefully reveal his parents names. Also try obituaries in the newspaper archives. They reveal a great deal. It would seem since there were others in the area, then census records might be your only choice right now. It was common for parents to live near their children or siblings back then. Judy
Evelyn, Has anyone been able to help you further with your search for Lourina's parents? Since they're not mentioned on the death certificate, and you know she was born in Dover, Stewart Co., TN, it would seem your next choice would be to look at the census records for Stewart County and see if you can find her and her parents there. You might at least be able to find someone with the name Selph even if it's prior to her birth. It's an unusual name and should be easy to find. Have you requested a birth certificate or record for her from the State of Tennessee or you maybe Stewart County. Sorry I'm not much help. Why did they marry in Alton? Was she living there, perhaps with her parents? A city directory would help then or a search of census records for Madison County. Judy Clark-Wick JWick@compuserve.com
