    1. Alton Civil War Prison
    2. Judy Wick
    3. Jean Robison, There is a searchable prisoner list for the Civil War prison in Alton. Go to: http://www.altonweb.com You'll see a navigation box at the top of the Alton Page. Open the box and highlight the catagory "Civil War" and click Go That takes you to "Alton In The Civil War" page. Go to the bottom of the page and you'll see an entry for "Confederate Prison and List of Confederate Soldiers" Click on it and it will take you to the page for the Alton Prison On that page, click on "Search Prison Records". Not all the prisoners are listed and some parts are still under construction, but it can be searched. There is a monument in the north part of Alton that bears the names of prisoners who died there, but I'm sure there is probably a list of names on file with the local historical society. The prison site and the monument are listed in the excellent 1999 Visitors Guide the Greater Alton/Twin Rivers Convention & Visitors Bureau sent to me recently. They can be located on the webpage too and you can request the Guide. There is a photo of the monument in the Guide and an old photo of the prison can be seen on the webpage. Just want to point out that the Alton website also has births and obituaries listed. 1. Alton Military Prison
    2. AJ Robison
    3. Does anyone have any information about the old military prison at Alton? I am searching for information on one John Doolin (Dulin) who lived at Johnson County Arkansas. Family information is that he deserted from his company in the Civil War; was arrested and was sent to Alton for incarceration. He and others later escaped and was not arrested again. I would like to find a listing or roster of those who were sent to the military prison. Does such a roster exist? Will appreciate any and all assistance. Jean Robison Coffeyville Kansas

    2. There is also a New Douglas Cemetery, just north of the town of New Douglas in Madison Co., ILL. Both a protestant and a catholic cemetery. That is where I found my husbands 3rd great grandparents, Mark and Rosannah Phillips Crowder. Their daughter Caroline Crowder Marion Foster is also buried there with several Foster family members. 3. Thought this would be an excellent idea for the Scot heritage in a lot of us. Robin in Indy -----Original Message----- From: Busbin8088@aol.com [mailto:Busbin8088@aol.com] Sent: Wednesday, March 31, 1999 12:36 PM To: McQUEEN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [McQUEEN-L] Tartan Day I saw the following announcement in our local paper and thought that other communities should also begin similar celebrations. It may be too late to organize such an event in your community this year, but you can start planning for next year. Glenn Busbin http://members.aol.com/Busbin8088/home.html ---------------------------------------------------------------- In honor of the many United States citizens of Scotch and Scotch-Irish ancestry and in recognition of their heritage, April 6 has been proclaimed Tartan Day by the US Senate. This day commemorates the 1320 writing of the Treaty of Arbroth, which declared Scotland independent from England and declared Bruce the king. This document is believed to be the basis of the American Declaration of Independence. This year, the Spartanburg community will celebrate Tartan Day. The Spartanburg County Library will host several events throughout the day, including travelogues and genealogy workshops. At 5:30 PM, there will be a community wide communion at the Episcopal Church of the Advent, followed by a ringing of church bells in the city. Following that, there will be several activities at Montgomery Commons, downtown between the Presbyterian and Episcopal churches. All events are free of charge. The Scottish and Scotch-Irish Heritage Committee urge you to attend the events and celebrate Tartan Day to honor your forefathers. ==== McQUEEN Mailing List ==== For a list of other mailing lists hosted by RootsWeb go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/

    1. Highland & 15th MO regiment
    2. Judith Hepburn
    3. My German great-grandfather served in the Civil War with the MO 15th Regiment or "Swiss Regiment,"the likely reason he later settled in Highland. Just started reading the war memoirs of Maurice Marcoot, a Highland soldier from same Regiment and Co B. Marcoot states that the regiment's Swiss flag "made by the ladies of Highland" which they later hoisted atop Missionary Ridge was returned to the city during their reinlistment furlough. Does anyone know if the city, a historical museum, etc. still has this flag? Is it displayed? Would love to see it next time I'm in the area! ---------------------- Judith Hepburn hepburnj@bc.edu Boston College

    1. Binney Station
    2. Robert Bissell
    3. Is there still an active railroad running North and south from E. St. Louis thru Marine, Alhambra,. Mt. Olive? Until 1917, there was a flag station called Binney north of Alhambra,on my ancestral Binneys' farm. It was pretty close to the Madison/Macoupin line and not too far west of the Montg. line. There was a C.C.C. and St. L. running sw-nw thru there. I see these on old RR map.

    3. ***Message forwarded by listowner, please contact**** Sandra Losby <S-Losby@govst.edu> directly if you can help. Thanks! Subject: Madison, IL Page From: "Sandra Losby" <S-Losby@govst.edu> Marriage records for the following couple. Andrew Smith and Nancy Fowler. I think it might be around 1850. I do know that their son was born around 1851. The family resided in Cass, Schuyler and Sangamon counties, but they do not show a marriage date for this couple. According to census records on their son, who married in 1881 at the age of 30, it shows that Andrew Smith was born in Illinois and Nancy Fowler in Tennessee. My e-mail address is S-Losby@govtst.edu
