    3. In my youth during the 1950's and 1960's there was a fishing club at the mouth of the Cahokia Diversion Canal (also referred to as the Hartford Canal) where it drained into the Mississippi River. This canal is about a mile south of Hartford, Illinois, and is opposite the point where the Missouri River meets the Mississippi. A small state park commemorating the Lewis and Clark Expedition (and accessable from Route 3) is on the south bank of the canal, and the club was on the north bank. My family had picnics at the state park many times, and we would see the club members dipping a net into the canal to catch fish. By the time I was in the boy scouts (Troop 24, South Roxana Dad's Club) activity at the club on the canal had stopped. 3. Hi, As listowner, I made the decision to forward the articles to the list, in hopes that the list would enjoy it as much as I did. Living in Virginia and growing up in Collinsville, I do not see much news of the area. Just think, in the next hundred years that article will still be in the our Madison County Archives...as will yours. <g> If it is not interesting to you then, please delete as you would anything that does not interest you. { "This is a genealogy list, why are we promoting down town Collinsville." Subject: Membership Drive Begins!! Date: 20 Apr 1999 18:31:16 -0000 From: Friend's.of.Downtown.Collinsville@mail-relay4.idt.net, "Inc." <thecaptain@postnet.com> Friend's of Downtown Collinsville, Inc. - http://www.downtowncollinsville.com Downtown Collinsville, Inc. Kicks Off 2nd Annual Membership Drive The Downtown Collinsville, Inc. office is humming with excitement as their 2nd annual membership drive kicks into full swing in April and May. The Membership Committee plans to repeat last year's success in attracting new residential and business members in addition to the continued support of current members. Chairperson, Carole Leone of Collinsville reports "I am thrilled that we already have members renewing their membership in DCI and reminder forms aren't even in the mail yet. We had such an overwhelming response to our membership drive last year, we're expecting even more members to join in the fun and help us move forward this year. Our downtown is a major element that differentiates us from other communities. The health of our downtown reflects the people who live in Collinsville and the businesses that locate here. It just makes sense to invest and be involved in the heart of your community." Roland Bauer and Bob Herr repeat Carole's sentiments. Mr. Bauer is longtime Collinsville resident and an individual member of Downtown Collinsville, Inc. He stated "I enjoyed a long involvement with Downtown Collinsville. I watched it grow and then decline. I feel strongly that the Downtown area is an integral part of our community and that DCI is certainly trying to find real solutions to upgrading the appearance of Downtown and attracting new businesses to the area." Bob Herr of Herr Funeral Home says, "It is important to have a voice for the Downtown area. DCI provides a vehicle that lets creative thinkers from city government, the community and businesses unite and come up with collective solutions. DCI brings us together as one person and we achieve much more than any of us would alone." Both are renewing their membership. A massive mailing campaign is now underway to continue the momentum that has characterized popular support of the downtown revitalization efforts of the various committees of Downtown Collinsville, Inc. Collinsville was one of the earliest participants in the Main Street program, which operates under the auspices of the Illinois Lt. Governor's Office. The program has proved popular nationwide due in large part to its emphasis on partnerships between local government, business and community participants who seek common sense and incremental plans to revitalize the downtown area of communities like Collinsville. For more information about joining Downtown Collinsville, Inc. as an individual or business contact Carole or Judy at 345-5598 or drop in at the Downtown office at 216 East Main.up the heart of Collinsville.

    3. Is there anyone out there that could do a look up of the 1870 and 1880 census for me. I would be willing to pay for look ups and need a contact. Am looking for my grandparents: WALTER POWERS and spouse ELLEN McCARTHY POWERS. children: John J. Powers Naomi Powers Nellie Powers William S. Ill. I am particularily interested in finding out where in Ireland each of my grandparents came from, and need a starting point to trace them back to their immigration. Thanks to anyone who will help me. I am located in the state of Georgia and am not able to make a trip to Illinois to do my own look ups. Thanks everyone for just being there. 2. I just checked my 1880 Census - Madison County, IL and did not find any Powers family with names you listed. There was only one Powers family in the county at that time. Try Jersey County, IL. that's where Fidelity is. Barbara Hitch

    1. Watson, James R 1830
    2. Is there anyone living in Madison County who can check on death, marriage and wills at the courthouse? I would be willing to pay for the help. James is on the 1830 census for Madison County living next door to Joab Watson, whom I believe to be his son. Joab is listed on the 1840 Bond Co. census, but James is not listed in either county. I'm wondering if he may have passed away and there might be a will. Angela
