I just wanted the list to know how I found my family. In 1998 Feb. I started looking for my family roots in Lengerich, where my gggrandfather was reported to have been born. With the information that I had, I then wrote to 3 families that had our surname. Using the Germany phone book I chose only male names, so I would not write to a possible widow. To my surprise I received two replies, both very interested in helping me find OUR family roots. After 16 months of digging through the church records they found that we did have a common father, 7 generations removed. They then chose to come to the states for a vacation on the east coast and this past week I went to met them in person. What a change it is to talk to someone that you have e-mail and snail mailed for the last 16 months. This is a meeting that I will never forget and we have made a date for next year for me to visit with them. You may try what I tried , and hope you have the same great results.
Deborah, Way to go!!!! That is one of the cool things about the Internet. It brings distant cousins' together. I have met numerous cousins over the Internet that I would never have met before. bbs@midkan.net from the Jayhawk state, Adam -----Original Message----- From: Deborah Plegge <dplegg01@mail.win.org> To: ILMADISO-L@rootsweb.com <ILMADISO-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, June 01, 1999 8:09 PM Subject: Family find I just wanted the list to know how I found my family. I am also interested in a look up in the marriage record. I have a letter stating the marriage date and who married my great grandparents. Did a parent have to sign for their daughter when they got married in 1869? I am interested to see if their are any other names in this marriage book. Jacob Straub married Caroline Schaeffer on Nov 25, 1869. Arlene, I would love to have a copy of any paperwork to prove a marriage for my great grandparents Frederick CORDUM/KORTUM and Elizabeth MILLER November 18, 1868 in Alton, Madison County! They were from Macoupin County, so don't know why they went to Alton--eloped? No hurry, thanks for your kind offer. If you are looking for birth, death or marriage records in Madison County, I suggest you countact the Illinois Regional Archives Depository (IRAD) at SIU-Carbondale. The IRAD website is at: http://www.sos.state.il.us/depts/archives/data loc.html For Madison County they have: Birth Index 1846-1915 Birth Records 1846-1900 Death Index 1878-1915 Death Records 1878-1915 Marriage Index 1813-1908 Marriage Records 1813-1903 You can request by mail or phone. It takes about 1-2 weeks to receive a response and copies are $0.25 each with a $1 minimum (much cheaper than directly from the Madison County Clerk!). In addition to the above records, they also have probate, recorder and poor farm records. If you have ancestors that lived in Alton, I suggest you visit the Hayner Public Library in Alton on Belle Street --> http://www.altonweb.com/hayner/ <--. The two best resources are the Alton city directories dating back to 1850 and the Alton Telegraph newspaper on microfilm from about the mid 1830's to the mid 1930's. There is a printed index to the newspapers there, too. FYI--film machines take dimes only and copies on the copier are $0.15. Hope this helps somebody! _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Visit http://www.msn.com

Thanks, Been searching for a long time so no big rush. If you ever need anything from Northern California, please let me know. Evelyn
Looking for information on John Gray and Jennette Brown Gray who resided in Granite City, Illinois in 1927. They had daughter Dorothy Louise Gray, born 4-5-1927. In 1927 John would have been about 35 years old and Jennette was also about 35. John Gray was born in Belleview, Missouri and Jennette Brown Gray was born in Missouri (I can't make out the name, but it looks like Granitella. If you have any information about John and Jennette, please contact me. Linda Kralman-Lambert ktlkate@extremezone.com
Sharon, I am searching for any surname of SELPH. I know my grandmother, Lourina Anna SELPH was born in 1849 in Dover, TN. She married my grandfather, Franklin A. DUNBAR in 1874 in Alton, IL. She died in Kirkwood, MO in 1900 and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery beside my grandfather. I have been working on finding Lourina's parents. On her death certificate, there are not parents listed. I think her brother might have been Robert SELPH because I was told a Bertha SELPH Higgs was my dad's cousin. She died in Collinsville around 1960's. I know there was a Ben Selph that died Feb 1967 and am interested on any newspaper article that would have information on his father. Thanks for any information you can find. Hi Evelyn, Please be patient with me. I will get to the Edwardsville library as soon as I can. I will get all of this checked out! Now, Collinsville might be a little difficult because that is in St. Clair County. There is a web site out there for it, I don't know the http off hand, but if you go to a search engine and just type in St. Clair County, IL, it should bring it up. A fellow on the site is very, very helpful! Have any problems let me know. Sharon
I am trying to locate where my ggg grandfather, James Fowler is buried. He died in 1838 in Madison Co. (near Troy.) Could someone please tell me what the cemeteries in that area are? Thanks Donna
Mine maybe a problem. I had this screwy grandmother that I never knew. She used so many names. But I am trying to research her under Blanche Carr and Blanche Porter, which was the name used at her time of death in 1922 in St. Louis. She said she lived in Alton Il and another newpaper article, she was using the name Porter in 1900. If these names happen to catch you eye, that would be fine. I have a feeling this will be difficult. Thanks for asking! And by the way this gal was a LULU, so nothing else about her shocks me. She was born in 1879 and died in 1922. Isn't that maddening? I know some of these places are busy, but I too wrote several places in Alton and Madison County and enclose SASE, the least they could do is send a note back and say they don't have time etc,, but I suppose there are two sides to the story. Just wanted to spout off. Thanks. At 06:00 AM 5/30/99 -0700, you wrote: >I wrote twice to the Madison County Genealogical Society at >P.O. I can go to the Edwardsville library on my days off if you want to send me the information to my AOL address. Sharon
I will be going to Madison county Court House sometime this summer, but I can't say when just yet. Do you need help? Arlene
I wrote twice to the Madison County Genealogical Society at P.O. Box 631 Edwardsville, IL 62025 asking for help with a death lookup. Their membership letter says they have a research committee that will help for a small fee. I enclosed a stamped, self-addressed envelope and offered to pay, but never had any response. Pat B.
Sorry I meant to post that to the person who needed the information and not to the rootsweb.
You should give the name. Also Madison County has an Historical Society and so does Troy which is close by - I would not be surprise if Collionsville doesn't have one. Than I would contact them to see if they any people who will do look=ups. Madison County Genealogical Society USGenWeb Archives: Madison County, Illinois Madison Co, IL USGENWEB ILLINOIS STATE HISTORICAL LIBRARY.
