    3. Hi, I just happened to see this and really don't know who it was meant for. I can recall going through Troy on Troy-Scott Road and seeing a cemetery on the left as you come into town. Also, it seems that I remember a big tombstone, visible from the road, that said Renfro. The name, Renfro, is very common in Madison County. Sorry that I can't help you beyond that, but hope it helps. Globob2@aol.com wrote: > > I got your message in San Diego. I have roots in Madison Co. They were married on August 14, 1870 at Freeburg, St. Clair, Illinois, by Rev. Theodore HORN at St. Paul's in Belleville. His name was Jacob HEIGELE. He then married my great great grandmother, Margaretha FISCHER in December of 1872. Jacob and Margaretha's daughter, Anna HEIGELE, married Friedrich "Fritz" KOEPPE, of Marinetown, Madison, Illinois. 2. Yes there are several cemeteries - and some are in St Jacob which is so close to Troy that you do not realize your not there. We have Isenbergs in different ones. They were always poor and so I do not think any headstones exist anymore. I checked at Troy's clerks office while my dad was still living - believe it was about 92 - anyway they didnt have a lot of records for our family. Dad and I walked over what looked like land that had no one burried there - and yet his parents were there. Very sad. So not sure how much luck you will have. I may be able to find out more later since I have a cousin who finally is helping and over at St Paul's Lutheran to see what death records she can locate. Helen in flooded LasVegas!

    2. Hi! Saw your posting on the Madison Co IL site, and I believe we are probably researching the same family. Actually, it is not my own family, but that of a dear friend that I am helping. She has spent many years and has lots of names and dates (much of it based on info from older family members), but not much in the way of documentation. I am trying to get the documentation together for her, as well as finding out whatever else I can along the way. Is your line thru Jesse Renfro who married Lettie West? This is my friend Mary's line, thru the daughter Amanda who married in 1841 to Thomas Deck. I have no info on Lettie at all, and what I have on Jesse is from the LDS site. This gives his date of birth as 22 Sep 1796 in Lincoln Co KY, d 1884 Madison Co, and md 1817 Madison Co to Lettie West. There are a few more generations of Renfros given, but I am first trying to document the generations from Jesse forward to my friend Mary. I have recently joined the Madison co Gen Society, and requested some cemetery records, county histories, marriage records, etc. If this is in fact your family, I would be willing to share anything which you may think would be of help to you. Although I now live in Colorado, I am originally from OH. We used to go thru Renfro Valley KY on the way to my grandmother's in St Pete FL. Renfro Valley is now in Rockcastle Co, but this county was originally part of Lincoln Co. Once I get a reply back from Madison Co, I plan to contact folks in Renfro Valley to see what they might have on the family--or have you done this?? Ms. Tacy A Arledge

I think the oldest Catholic Church in Alton is SS Peter and Paul (the Old Cathedral) located on State St. Refering to "Alton, Illinois Illustrated, 1912", the oldest Catholic assembly was initiated in 1840 in Upper Alton. The first chuch was erected in 1843 on Third Street. In 1856 SS Peter and Paul's was completed and it became the Bishop's Cathedral. I think St. Mary's was erected later than 1856.
