    3. Illinois Terminal was a railroad company. My uncle use to work for them as a railroad traffic guard . Can't remember the true job title. He worked from a tower controlling which track the trains ran on. A firehelper, would have been someone who stoked the fire, with wood or coal. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Lynde126@aol.com> To: <ILMADISO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 13, 1999 7:38 PM Subject: INDUSTRY or BUSINESS > I just received my g/grandfather's Record Of Funeral from the Funeral Home > where he had been laid out at, Smith Funeral Home, in 1943, and in the space > for Industry or business, the Funeral Director wrote in: ILLINOIS TERMINAL. > Does anyone know where the "Illinois Terminal" is, what is it, and is it > still in business. 1. Illinois Terminal
    2. I just came back from the library where I went to get information on Anaheim California since I am spending two days there next week. Anyway looked up Illinois Terminal and found a book listed called Illinois Terminal, the electric years by Paul Stringham. Color pictures on page 263 and Bilio on 256. That was the only content. I also remember when I used to work in Chicago that there was a building I passed that housed all the railroad retirement information. Not to long ago on another list someone found that address and website and was writing there for information. Sorry I cannot help more that that. Helen in wet and warm LasVegas.

    1. Re: ILMADISO-D Digest V99 #157 ILLINOIS TERMINAL
    2. No, Illinois Terminal is not a funeral home or a prognosis of a disease. It is/was (?) the Illinois Terminal Railroad. It ran passenger interurban trains from St. Louis via Venice, Madison, Granite City, etc to various Illinois towns including Alton, Springfield, etc. They also had freight service but I don't remember much except that they seemed to have a big railroad yard between Madison and Venice. It's probably been gobbled up and renamed like all of our banks by this time. I no longer live in Granite City, having settled in northern IL after WWII. TOP FIFTEEN ETHNIC GROUPS IN THE U.S. (1990 U.S. CENSUS) German--23.3% Irish--15.6% English--13.1% African American--9.6% Hispanic--7.0% Italian--5.9% Franco-American--5.3% Polish--3.8% Native American--3.5% Dutch--2.5% Scots-Irish--2.3% Scottish--2.2% Swedish--1.9% Norwegian--1.6% Russian--1.2% SOURCES FOR DETERMINING ETHNIC ORIGINS Home Sources ~ Census Records ~ Naturalization Records ~ Passenger Lists ~ Printed Biographies, Genealogies, and Family Histories ~ Surname Sources GENERAL REFERENCE BOOKS FOR ETHNIC STUDIES One of the most definitive and useful background sources for almost every ethnic group is Stephen Thernstrom's, "Harvard Encyclopedia of American Ethnic Groups" (Cambridge, MA: Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, 1980). It assembles the basic information about the multitude of people who make up the population of the United States. It is a succinct, authoritative synthesis of the origins and histories of 106 ethnic groups, with twenty-nine thematic essays, eighty-seven maps, and a critical bibliography for each section. ~ Paul Wasserman and Alice E. Kennington, eds., "Ethnic Information Sources of the United States," 2nd ed., 2 vols. (Detroit: Gale Research Co., 1983) assembles in one source, information about the various ethnic groups that comprise the U.S. populace. The work is intended for use by individuals whose ancestors or relatives belong to particular ethnic groups, and by students, educators, librarians, and others interested in learning about distinctive ethnic lines and the countries from which they are drawn. It is also for those who require information about the details of history, culture, customs, values, politics, and problems of ethnic groups in the United States. Topics and resources include standard ethnic sources and research institutions, as well as more obscure information (such as embassies, ethnic fraternal organizations, ethnic newspaper collections, dealers of ethnic books, and ethnic museums) that may be especially useful for genealogists. "Ethnic Information Sources" indicates, for example, that the American Irish Historical Society (http://www.aihs.org/) maintains a library of more than 25,000 volumes on Irish history and genealogy and the Irish in America. ~

    1. Re:thoughts on this newsletter
    2. As a brand-new subscriber to this newsletter--who seemed to come in during the flurry of emails that exploded--I have a few thoughts. However, must of them are directed at the ones who quickly hit "unsubscribe", so they won't see this. It only takes a few seconds to read everything that went thru, and all of the ones that were "re: test" were very short. More to the point, some of them had some good info in them and small tidbits that were of big help to me--even though they weren't directed to me. It is also very easy to forget that replies go back to the newsletter, and not the individual when it is the individual's name that comes up on your screen--I know, because I have done it myself. So to all those who contacted me regarding the Renfro and Deck research--thank you very much. For Marennad and Hepgrannie, I say right on and thank you very much as well. And for all the complainers--take a chill pill. Life is too short to grumble over messages that take 3 seconds to read and might help a dozen other folks in their research.

    3. If this location is Township 22 North and Range 13 West, then it is in present day McDonough Co. If you go to the Illinois State Archives at: http://www.sos.state.il.us/depts/archives/arc_home.html and choose Public Domain Land Sales and then the How to Determine Location of Land, you can download a map with all the Townships and Ranges designated.
