Well, it may not be all bad. They are forcasting a break in this hot spell. Tomorrow, only 93, high 80's, lower humidity early part of the week. So, you have lucked out--because it's been baaaaaaaaaaaaaad, all this week.
Just read your e-mail about the heat here in Madison County. Today and yesterday, it was 107 in Granite City. Officially 103 at St. Louis Airport. We are expecting cooling temperatures Sunday and by Monday and Tuesday back to normal. Low 70s, high upper 80s or low 90s. Right now that sounds good. Hope the weather is nice for your trip. A few days ago someone posted here something that mentioned the surname MARTENS. I cut and pasted it to send to a friend researching that line but the paste didn't stick and I didn't catch it before the message went out. Now the posting has been deleted. Does anyone happen to have that posting? It must have come over about July 22 or 23. This Edwardsville Paper called the Intelligencer, just struck me like lightning. I have not been keeping up with this converstaion on Edwardsville until now. I know some one posted, but I don't remember. If I want to check something in the Intelligencer fro a article for April - June of 1922, where would I write. I can't find this article which was published in the Intelligencer, because I may have been looking at the wrong town. Thanks. Katherine, You need a bit more information, most importantly you need a range (R) and a principle meridian (PM). Township 24N could be in either Carroll or Ogle counties if measured from the 4th Principal Meridian, for example. Carroll county would include land between Ranges 2E and 7E, whild Ogle county would include land between Ranges 7E and 11E. Illinois actually has land described by three Principal Meridians, so you really do need to get the Range and PM description. One book I've found extremely helpful in trying to make sense out of property descriptions is Wade Hone's "Land & Property Research in the United States." For a more general introduction to using land records for doing genealogical research you might also want to check out: http://users.arn.net/~billco/uslpr.htm This is "a self-paced set of lessons on the basics of land and property research in the United States" from the INTERNATIONAL INTERNET GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY UNIVERSITY. I'm just starting to use land records for doing research, and it drives me crazy trying to understand what's going on, but I've also been able to establish a link between two individuals that I didn't have before, so it's worth the frustration. Terry, Maybe you will be able to find the information you seek about your Lutheran family at one of the following websites: http://www.aal.org/LutheransOnline/Gene_Ex/info_new.html http://www.aal.org/LutheransOnline/Gene_Ex/index.html Gayle
Hello, I am trying to track down my elusive 3g grandfather. I know that my 2g grandmother was confirmed in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Troy, IL. I have checked IRAD and haven't found anything on her parents. I know her dad's name was Carl. I have written the church, but haven't gotten a response. I am going to visit there when I go home to St. Louis in Aug. Any idea if there is a cemetery for the church or if the courthouse there would have more records than IRAD? I am going to contact the church again when I actually get there. I would appreciate any help! Sincerely, Terri Durning Goodells, MI ng Goodells, MI

You didn't give a name of your grandfather. All of my family were members of that church since it began. I think if you send them a check and a stamp enclosed envelope they will help you out.Staff is a little there and so it might take them a little while. I have a few holes yet in my line that I have to get from them. Received loads of help from St Paul in Hamil - so I am sure they will help you if you do not have the time to drive over there. Also do it now since school starts there soon.

Hi, Edwardsville is across the river from St. Louis. We lived there for eight years ending in 1964, when we moved to Connecticut. It was a great little town and we loved it.! We lived in a lovely 100 year old home right across the street from the bandstand and library. After we left, although the historical society fought to keep that house as a National Landmark, a realtor bought it, tore it down and put up a building and loan. Aaargh! Yes, the Telegraph goes back further than that. Lynn, The Alton newspaper wouldn't have obits that far back for Edwardsville people. Well, they might have some--but in that time period you best go to the Edwardsville library. Also, if you don't find the obit as an "obit", check thru the "community news" items. I've found a lot of obits in the late 1890's, etc. in the "community columns".
